Kargı Plateau

The most suitable period for plateau visits is the summer months. Between June and September, the weather is mild, ideal for escaping the heat during the day. However, nights are cool at an altitude of 1400 meters; the evening breeze is felt even in mid-July. Visits are not preferred in winter due to snowfall and difficult road conditions. It is advisable to bring a jacket with you for sudden weather changes typical of high-altitude regions.

The plateau is approximately 140 kilometers from Çorum city center. First, go to Kargı district, then another 8-26 kilometers in the northeast direction; according to sources, the distance varies between 21 and 26 km, depending on the road branches. After reaching Kargı via the D785 highway, the plateau road follows a mountainous and winding route. Public transportation services are not regular, so going by private car or rental car is the most practical way. Village settlements and pine forests accompany the road.

It is more efficient to combine a visit to Kargı Plateau with the district center. Kargı is located in the Kızılırmak Valley; its canyon and the ruins of the ancient city of Pimolisa are among the other stops in the district. Visiting the ancient city and museum in the district center in the morning and then going up to the plateau in the afternoon is a good way to make the most of the day. Abdullah Plateau is also nearby and can be added to the same day's itinerary.

For a day trip, 3-5 hours are sufficient: spending some time at the ponds, having a picnic, and taking a short forest walk fit into this period. For those considering camping, 1-2 nights are more meaningful; there are areas around Gökçedoğan and Aksu ponds where tents can be set up. If combined with other stops in Kargı district, allocating a total of 2 days makes the trip pace more comfortable.

Arrive at Kargı district center early in the morning and visit the ancient city of Pimolisa and any small museum. Head towards the plateau road around noon, stop at Aksu Pond and look for a place where you can taste trout. In the afternoon, go to the Gökçedoğan side and take a short walk in the forest. Plan your return near sunset, as night driving on the mountain road is not recommended.

Cell phone reception may weaken along the way, so downloading directions in advance is useful. There are private properties among the plateau houses, and it is necessary to respect the surrounding settlements. Those who want to fish are advised to ask the pond management for information on fees and rules, if any, and confirm on site. Fuel stations become sparse after Kargı district center, so it's wise to fill up the tank beforehand.

Shots taken from the edge of the ponds are particularly impressive before the morning mist dissipates. The wooden facades of the plateau houses and the pine ridges behind them are also a preferred composition for photographers. In the afternoon, the light accentuates the shadow-light contrast in forested areas.
