Çorum Castle rises on a low hill overlooking the plain to the south of the city. The first written document about the castle dates back to 1571; in 1577, a document refers to the castle as 'Sultan Suleiman's Endowment'. Evliya Çelebi, who visited here in the 17th century, wrote in his Seyahatname (Book of Travels) that the castle was a Seljuk structure built by Sultan Kılıçarslan.
The square-plan structure used cut stone and rubble stone, as well as spolia stones from the Roman-Byzantine period. There is a bastion at each of the four corners, and two rectangular projections on each facade, including the gate on the north facade. According to historical records, there was a small mosque and forty-two residences inside; today, traces of some of these remain.
