Gelibolu Mevlevihanesi is the Ağazade Dervish Lodge, founded in the 17th century near the seaside in Hamzakoy, boasting the largest semahane among fifteen Mevlevi asitanes; its restored semahane-tomb building and stone gates are open to visitors.
Gelibolu Mevlevihanesi (Mevlevi Lodge) is located in Hamzakoy, near the seaside. It was founded in the 17th century, probably before 1621, by Ağazade Mehmet Hakiki Dede, son of Kara Hasan Ağa, one of the Janissary ağas; hence, it is also known as the Ağazade Dervish Lodge. With the largest land area and the biggest semahane among fifteen Mevlevi asitanes, the structure served as an important center of wisdom and art during the Ottoman period.
Today, the semahane-tomb building and two main gates remain from the original structure. The building features an eclectic style. While the ground floor is entered through the north and south gates, the gallery floor is accessed by oval double stairs on the west facade. The interior is adorned with hand-painted floral motifs and calligraphic works. During World War I, the last sheikh, Burhaneddin Dede, joined the Mevlevi regiment with seven dervishes and stayed in Damascus for three years; after the war, the building was used as an arsenal and kept within a military area for a long time. In 1994, the General Directorate of Foundations purchased and restored the building, opening it to visitors on September 17, 2005. Today, its use and supervision are under the Gelibolu District Governorship.
Most visitors highlight the hand-painted decorations in the interior and the spaciousness of the semahane. The restoration is often praised as successful, and a peaceful atmosphere is frequently mentioned. However, some comments note that the building's doors open and close at variable hours, and the garden and surrounding area are neglected. Visitors recommend consulting the attendant at the outer gate. It is said that Mesnevi readings and Sema dhikr programs are organized by the Sufi Foundation on Sundays; those wishing to attend these programs should inquire in advance.

It is also known as the Ağazade Dervish Lodge, named after its founder, Ağazade Mehmet Hakiki Dede. The structures remaining today consist of the semahane-tomb building and two main gates. The building features an eclectic style, with access to the ground floor through the north and south gates, and to the gallery floor via oval double stairs on the west facade.
When to Visit
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Gelibolu, away from the summer heat and crowds, allowing for a comfortable tour. It is also particularly interesting for those who wish to attend the Mesnevi reading and Sema dhikr program organized by the Sufi Foundation on Sundays. The atmosphere of the place is more vibrant on such event days.
How to Get There
It is a short drive from Gelibolu center towards Hamzakoy beach. If you are going by your own car, parking is reportedly not an issue in the vicinity. If you plan to use public transport, confirm current schedule information in advance.
Things to Consider Before Visiting
The most frequently mentioned issue in visitor comments is that the building's door is sometimes closed and sometimes open. Some found it closed upon arrival, while others were able to enter through the left door. Asking the attendant at the outer gate is the most practical way. There are multiple comments about the garden and surrounding area being neglected, so adjust your expectations accordingly.
Photo Spots
The hand-painted floral motifs and calligraphic works in the interior offer good framing, especially from the gallery floor. The main gates feature interesting details for exterior shots. The building's proximity to the sea from the garden side can also be included in your frame.
