Ortunç Bay

The best time for Ortunç Bay is early June and September. In mid-July to August, the bay is overflowing; moreover, between June 15 and August 15, entry can sometimes be restricted by the gendarmerie due to fire risk. Some visitors report encountering checkpoints during these dates; find out the situation from local sources before you go.

On windy days, the bay's waters can be choppy, and umbrellas don't hold up. Checking the wind forecast in advance can save the day. Morning hours are more comfortable in terms of both crowds and heat.

From Ayvalık, you can cross to Cunda Island by car over the bridge; the distance is approximately 5 km. After reaching Cunda center, you continue by road to Ortunç Bay. The last section of the road is dirt and stony; high-clearance vehicles progress much more easily on this part. It can also be reached with standard passenger cars, but slow driving is essential.

It is possible to go by bicycle; it's easy to find rental bicycles in Cunda. Keep in mind that the last section is tiring. Taxis can also be preferred from Cunda center or Ayvalık.

There are no markets, buffets, or cafes in and around Ortunç Bay. Before going to the bay, you need to get all your supplies from Cunda center or Ayvalık. Water, snacks, fruit, and sunscreen should definitely be on the list.

After returning from the bay, tables laden with olive oil appetizers, fresh fish, and the island's famous olives await you in Cunda's historical bazaar. Fish restaurants around the pier offer excellent examples of Aegean cuisine.

If you are coming only for swimming and a picnic, half a day to a full day is sufficient. Arriving at the bay in the morning and visiting Cunda center in the afternoon makes for a good itinerary.

If you are planning to camp, a one or two-night stay truly lets you experience the bay's atmosphere. The sound of the forest and the starry sky at night are an experience in themselves. Paid camping areas are available; there are also free areas where tents can be set up.

The best photo angles of the bay are from spots looking out to sea through the pine trees. The observation deck offers a good frame to see both Ortunç Bay and partially Akvaryum Bay; the color transitions in the morning light are quite impressive.

Underwater shots taken through the clear water are also striking; especially on calm days, the view from inside the water towards the shore yields beautiful frames. The dense pine forest surrounding the bay also creates a rich photographic background.

Fire ban: Absolutely do not light a fire around the bay. Between June 15 and August 15, entry may be restricted due to fire risk; confirm the situation before going during these dates.

Trash: Trash bins have been placed around the bay by the municipality; always put your trash in these bins, do not throw it in the forest. Visitors are very sensitive about cleanliness, and maintaining this sensitivity is critical for the future of the bay.

Food and drink: There are no sales points nearby; get all your needs in advance. The sea water can be cool, be prepared for this. In mid-summer, yachts sometimes anchor close to the shore; this situation is occasionally found to be disturbing.

Paid camping areas are available in Ortunç Bay; it's a good idea to contact the establishments in advance for prices and capacities. There are also free areas where tents can be set up; however, it is essential not to light a fire due to fire risk and to collect your trash.

If you prefer a hotel or guesthouse, Cunda center is the best option. Boutique hotels converted from historical stone houses best reflect the island's atmosphere. Ayvalık center is also close and a practical alternative in terms of transportation.
