Lovers' Hill

The ideal period to visit Lovers' Hill is between April-June and September-November. During these months, the weather is neither scorching nor cold; the bay view is clearest under a bright sky. In mid-summer, the hill can get quite crowded, and climbing the slope in the midday heat can be tiring.

Being on the hill during sunset hours offers a special experience for those who want to see Ayvalık Bay bathed in orange-pink hues. Since the hill is a windy spot, take an extra layer of clothing regardless of the season.

To reach Lovers' Hill, you first need to go from Ayvalık to Cunda Island. Since the island is connected to Ayvalık by a bridge, direct passage by car is possible. Sea taxis also operate between the two points.

After arriving at the island center, you can reach the hill in two different ways: You can walk up the hilly path starting from Cunda bazaar, passing through old Greek houses and cobblestone streets. Alternatively, it is also possible to go up by car or taxi via the island's old road. Visitors prefer walking over driving; however, sturdy-soled shoes are essential.

The most well-known photo frame of Lovers' Hill is capturing the windmill and the bay behind it in the same shot. From the observation terrace right next to the windmill, Ayvalık Bay, Şeytan Sofrası (Devil's Table), and the silhouette of Lesbos Island are visible at a glance.

Visitors point out one thing: rather than the windmill on the hill, the solitary windmill on the opposite slope offers a more photographic composition. Don't forget to visit there too. Striking shots can be captured at both points in the sunset light.

Right below the windmill, there is a cafe section overlooking the view. After climbing the hill, you can sit here and order a drink. Visitors find the prices reasonable. There is also a small souvenir corner in the windmill.

For a more comprehensive dining experience, you need to go down to Cunda bazaar and the pier area. The island is known for its taverns and fish restaurants offering the finest examples of Aegean cuisine.

The path leading up to the hill can have unmaintained sections; visitors emphasize the need to be careful, especially when descending. It becomes difficult to go up with high heels or flat sandals; prefer sports shoes.

Since the hill is an open and high point on the island, the wind can blow strongly. Even in summer, have a light top with you. Although it is technically possible to go by car, parking is limited and the road is narrow; walking is both more practical and much more enjoyable.

Several elements can be visited together on the hill. The restored windmill was renovated by the Koç family, creating a small Rahmi Koç museum inside. You do not need to buy a separate ticket to see the windmill. Next to it, there is also a small section selling souvenirs and a cafe overlooking the view.

The hill itself, as one of the highest points on Cunda Island, offers a bird's-eye view of the entire Ayvalık Bay. Şeytan Sofrası (Devil's Table) and Lesbos Island in the distance are also part of this view. It is a good stop for those who want to sit and rest, watch the bay, and listen to the silence of the island.
