Phellos is an ancient Lycian city located on the Felen Plateau near Kaş, Antalya, at an altitude of 850-950 meters, dating back to the Lycian period; it is free to visit, and rock tombs and traces of city walls can be seen.
Phellos is an ancient Lycian city built on a dominant hill on the slope of Mount Felen, northeast of Kaş. Located 850 to 950 meters above sea level, the city is today approximately 2 kilometers from Çukurbağ Village. In ancient times, Antiphellos, which served as Phellos's port settlement, grew over time to become the modern-day Kaş district. During the Hellenistic period, Antiphellos gained prominence while Phellos gradually declined; this relationship between the two cities was an important dynamic that shaped the region's trade and settlement history.
Although the remains standing in the city today are limited, Lycian rock tombs, traces of city walls, and various architectural fragments can still be seen. Phellos attracts visitors more with its surrounding mountainous landscape and secluded atmosphere than with its archaeological remains. Located on or near the Lycian Way, the city is included in long hiking routes and is a popular spot for nature and history enthusiasts.

Guide's Note
Phellos Ancient City is an area that attracts visitors with its historical remains, especially its rock tombs. While some visitors emphasize the potential and historical value of the artifacts here, a significant disappointment regarding the area not being adequately protected and being left to its fate is also noteworthy. The size of the rock tombs stands out as a particularly positive detail.
Due to the lack of excavation work, the number of artifacts that can be seen is quite limited compared to other large ancient cities. It would be beneficial to adjust your expectations accordingly, keeping this in mind.

What is Phellos, and Where is it Located?
Phellos is an ancient Lycian city located on the Felen Plateau, near Çukurbağ Village, which is part of the Kaş district of Antalya. Situated 850 to 950 meters above sea level, the city was built on a hill leaning against the steep slopes of the Taurus Mountains, north of Kaş (anciently known as Antiphellos). With a settlement history dating back to the 7th century BC, Phellos has gone down in history as one of the small but ancient cities of the Lycian League.
In ancient times, Phellos and Antiphellos functioned as two complementary settlements: Phellos was the center in the mountainous inland region, while Antiphellos was its gateway to the sea. With the Hellenistic period, the port city of Antiphellos gained prominence, and Phellos gradually lost its importance. The district we know today as Kaş was built upon this old port city.
What to See in the City?
The number of standing structures in Phellos is quite limited; therefore, one should not go with the expectation of grand monuments or a well-preserved theater. Lycian-era rock tombs, stone traces of city walls, and various architectural fragments can still be seen. Rock tombs are one of the most characteristic elements of Lycian architecture and reflect a building tradition frequently encountered in other ancient cities in the region.
The scarcity of remains does not make Phellos worthless; on the contrary, the feeling of discovering the city is much stronger here. Being alone with Lycian history in a quiet atmosphere, away from tourist crowds, constitutes the main attraction for many visitors.
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable periods to visit Phellos are spring and autumn. In April-May, the plateau is covered with flowers, the weather is cool and ideal for hiking. In September-October, the summer crowds have dispersed, and temperatures have dropped. Due to the high altitude, temperatures are significantly lower even in summer compared to the coast; however, as the sun can be scorching, early morning hours should be preferred.
In winter months, roads leading to Felen Plateau can sometimes be closed or become very challenging. Those planning a visit during this period are advised to check weather conditions in advance.
How to Get to Phellos?
The most practical way to reach Phellos is by private car or taxi. From Kaş town center, after an approximately 15-20 minute drive towards Çukurbağ Village, you reach the village. From the village, you need to continue on foot along the footpath leading to the ancient city. Since the path is steep and uneven, sturdy hiking shoes are essential.
Public transport from Kaş is quite limited; minibus services are irregular and infrequent. Those hiking on the Lycian Way can include Phellos in their route by starting from Kaş or surrounding villages. For those coming from Antalya, Kaş is approximately a 3-hour drive away.
Route Suggestion: Combine with Kaş and its Surroundings
Phellos alone is enough for a half-day visit; however, when combined with other ancient cities in the region, you can have a much more productive day. You can go up to Phellos in the early morning and then descend to Kaş town center in the afternoon to visit the remains of ancient Antiphellos, the Kaş theater, and the harbor area. Kaş is also close to important Lycian cities such as Kekova, Simena (Kaleköy), and Myra.
For those planning a hike along the Lycian Way, Phellos is a natural part of the route. It is recommended that those choosing this route travel with an experienced guide or a reliable map; signposts on the plateau can be insufficient.
Photo Spots
Phellos's strongest photographic potential comes more from its surrounding landscape than from the ruins themselves. The panoramic view from the wide plateau of Felen Plateau extending to Kaş and the Mediterranean is particularly impressive in the morning light. The rock tombs offer interesting details for photography, reflecting the unique texture of Lycian architecture.
In spring, when the plateau is covered with flowers, the background becomes richer; during this period, it is possible to capture shots where ancient stones and the flowery plateau are seen together. The play of light on the mountains near sunset also creates worthwhile photographic opportunities.
Things to Consider Before Visiting
Phellos is an undeveloped, secluded ancient city. It is essential to bring enough water and snacks with you before visiting; there are no cafes or markets nearby. Since the roads are uneven and rocky, it is recommended not to go without quality hiking shoes.
Cell phone signal on the plateau can be weak or non-existent; therefore, downloading route information in advance and making it available offline would be a good precaution. Sunscreen and a hat should definitely be carried to reduce the effect of solar radiation at high altitudes. In winter and early spring, before setting off, the weather conditions and whether the village road is open should be checked.
Where to Eat, What to Drink?
There are no food and drink facilities immediately near Phellos. Upon returning from your visit, Kaş town center offers various options. In Kaş, fresh seafood, Mediterranean appetizers, and local breakfast culture stand out. Restaurants around the harbor can be preferred for both their view and taste.
For those planning long hikes, taking sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of water is both a practical and safe approach. After returning to Kaş, sitting in the small cafes by the harbor can also be a nice option to relax.
