Kitanaura Ancient City

Kitanaura is one of the relatively lesser-known spots on Antalya's ancient city map. It is located within the borders of Gölcük Neighborhood, Kumluca district, in the hills north of Saraycık. It does not have the organized tourism infrastructure of places like Perge, Aspendos, or Phaselis; this turns the visit into a more independent, more exploratory experience. Considered within the scope of nature-culture tourism, the area particularly attracts hikers and history enthusiasts.

You can reach Kumluca district from Antalya city center via the D400 highway. From Kumluca center, you need to follow the Hisarçandır or Üçoluk plateau road towards Gölcük Neighborhood and Saraycık. Since some of the roads leading to the ancient city may be unpaved or dirt roads, traveling with a high-clearance or SUV-type vehicle will significantly ease the journey. The distance to Kumluca center is approximately 40 kilometers. Direct access by public transport is quite limited, so a private vehicle remains the most practical option.

The most suitable periods to visit Kitanaura are spring and autumn. In April-May, the region turns green, and temperatures are ideal for hiking. In September-October, the summer heat subsides; the plateau landscapes around the ancient city gain a different appearance with autumn colors. In summer, the intense heat brought by the Mediterranean climate can make hiking in the hills difficult. In this period, it's a good idea to set out early in the morning. In winter, keep in mind that road-related access problems may occur.

Half a day is sufficient for Kitanaura Ancient City, but considering its distance from Kumluca district center, it would be more efficient to plan the region as part of a full-day itinerary. You can allocate 2-4 hours for the ancient city itself. If you want to explore the surrounding plateau roads or spend time taking photos, it would be logical to extend this period a bit more.

You can combine Kitanaura with other historical and natural values of Kumluca district to create a wonderful day tour. Set off from Antalya early in the morning, first reach Kitanaura, and after visiting the ancient city, enjoy the view of Hisarçandır or Üçoluk plateau. In the afternoon, descend to Kumluca center to get to know the local texture of the district, and on the way back, you can follow Antalya's coastline. For those who want to see more than one ancient city in the region, other archaeological sites in and around Finike can also be added to the itinerary.

Kitanaura, with its location on a hill, offers a dominant perspective of its surroundings. The view extending from the elevations north of Saraycık to the Kumluca plain and the Mediterranean coast creates a valuable frame for wide-angle photographs. Ancient structural remains, especially when combined with the surrounding greenery in spring, create strong compositions. The light hitting the hills during sunrise and sunset creates good opportunities for both landscape and architectural photography.

Since Kitanaura is an archaeological site whose infrastructure is not fully organized, it is important to make some preparations before visiting. Bring enough water and snacks; there may not be a market or cafe easily accessible nearby. Wear sturdy, suitable shoes for walking on rough terrain. Sunscreen and a hat become essential, especially in summer. Confirming the exact boundaries of the area and the precise location of the ruins with local guides or Kumluca Municipality beforehand will make your visit more efficient. Avoid damaging ancient artifacts and removing any material from the site.

Finding dining options right near Kitanaura can be difficult. Kumluca district center is the most suitable stop before or after your visit. Kumluca is one of Antalya's important agricultural districts; it is especially known for its citrus and vegetable production. In the restaurants in the district center, you can find simple dishes based on fresh ingredients from Mediterranean cuisine. Gözleme (Turkish flatbread), village breakfast, and fresh vegetable dishes are among the prominent flavors of the region.
