Esençay Şahin Plateau

The most suitable period to visit Şahin Plateau is during the summer and early autumn seasons, extending from early June to late September. The cool air brought by the 1100-meter altitude provides great relief, especially for visitors overwhelmed by the heat in the lowlands during July and August. In these months, the pond's color reaches its most vibrant emerald tones, and the forest cover presents a lush green tableau.

In late spring, in May, the plateau also takes on a beautiful appearance; however, the weather can be variable, and there may be a risk of muddy roads. In winter months, reaching the plateau becomes difficult; it can be dangerous to go by private car due to snow and icy ground.

The easiest way to reach Esençay Şahin Plateau is by private car. From Taşova town center, proceed towards Erbaa; turn off the main road at the Esençay village sign and continue for approximately 7 kilometers to reach the plateau. The road largely passes through the forest; careful driving is recommended as there are narrow and winding sections.

Regular minibus services operate from Amasya city center to Taşova. After arriving in Taşova, you may need to take a taxi or seek assistance from locals to reach the plateau. Direct access to the plateau by public transport is not possible.

Şahin Plateau offers multiple strong frames for photography enthusiasts. The northern shore of the pond provides an ideal angle to capture the reflection of the forest most clearly; in the early morning hours, mist and reflection can be seen together. Wide-angle shots taken from the picnic areas with gazebos combine the pond with the surrounding pine forest in the same frame.

Photos taken during the transition period in the first weeks of autumn, from late September to early October, when yellow and orange tones meet the green forest, are particularly striking. It is also possible to capture light play within the forest along the hiking route.

Şahin Plateau is located on the officially marked 8-A Amasya Taşova Esençay Şahin Plateau Long Hiking Route. This route is considered one of the most important recreational routes in the region and offers the opportunity to explore the forest areas surrounding the plateau.

During the hike, the clean air and silence brought by the high altitude add a special pleasure for those who want to get away from city noise. It is recommended to take enough water and snacks with you before starting the hike, and to wear sturdy-soled shoes.

There is no permanent restaurant or cafe infrastructure on Şahin Plateau. The vast majority of visitors use the picnic areas with gazebos by the pond and have picnics with the food they bring. Therefore, it is most practical to procure provisions from Taşova town center or Amasya before going to the plateau.

In Taşova, there are small restaurants reflecting local Amasya cuisine. Tarhana soup, stuffed meat dishes, and local pastries are among the prominent flavors of this cuisine. During festival periods, local food stalls may be set up on the plateau.

The road to the plateau is narrow and winding; care must be taken when driving. Speed limit enforcement is known to be strict on the Taşova-Erbaa route. Since there is no permanent market or pharmacy on the plateau, it is important to procure water, food, and any supplies you may need in advance.

As the picnic area is in a natural environment, you are expected to take your trash with you and not harm nature. During autumn and spring transition periods, the weather can change suddenly, so it would be wise to carry an extra layer of clothing. The area is not suitable for disabled access or stroller use.
