Suleyman Tower

Standing on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean on the western coast of Yumurtalık, Suleyman Tower is an important structure that has survived from the Ottoman period. The old name of the tower is Armed Ayas Castle, and the area where it is located coincides with the settlement historically known as the Ancient City of Ayas. Ayas served as a critical port city in Eastern Mediterranean trade, especially during the Middle Ages.

Historical rock tombs are located in the cliffs below the restored structure. These tombs reveal how deep the region's history goes. The tower and its surroundings are a unique visiting point as they offer traces of both the Ottoman and earlier periods in a single area.

Yumurtalık, with its Mediterranean climate, is suitable for visits for most of the year. However, April-May and September-October stand out as the most ideal periods. During these months, temperatures are mild, crowds are smaller, and the surrounding nature is at its most vibrant green.

Since Yumurtalık attracts intense interest from holidaymakers in the summer months, visiting in the early morning or late afternoon during July-August ensures a more peaceful experience. As the tower is located outdoors, it can also be visited in winter; however, strong winds and rainfall may occasionally be seen between December and February.

The light the tower and its surroundings receive at sunset creates a special attraction for photography enthusiasts. If possible, planning a visit in the evening hours will not disappoint.

Suleyman Tower is approximately 85 km from Adana city center. The most practical transportation option is a private car. From Adana, you can follow the D-400 highway through Ceyhan towards Yumurtalık, and after reaching the district center, it is sufficient to continue for another 1.3-1.5 km on Alparslan Türkeş Street to the tower.

For those preferring public transport, there are regular minibus services from Adana to Yumurtalık. It is possible to reach the tower from the district center by walking or by taxi. Since car rental options in Yumurtalık are limited, traveling by car from Adana is generally easier.

Suleyman Tower is one of the strongest photography locations around Yumurtalık. The sea-facing facade of the tower, especially at sunset hours, transforms into a painting with orange-gold tones. With a wide-angle lens, it is possible to capture both the tower and the Mediterranean silhouette behind it in the same frame.

The cliffs and rock tombs below the tower also offer interesting compositions. In the morning hours, the mist rising from the sea and soft light allow you to capture more dramatic shots. Distant shots taken from various points on the road while approaching the tower are also quite impressive.

Yumurtalık is a coastal district known for its fresh seafood. After visiting the tower, eating fresh sea bass, sea bream, or shrimp at the fish restaurants in the district center completes the day beautifully. Fish from the fertile waters of the bay are served very fresh in the local restaurants here.

Indispensable delicacies of Adana cuisine, such as Adana kebab and şalgam suyu (turnip juice), can also be easily found in the district. Olive oil and citrus products sold by local producers in Yumurtalık market are also worth trying.

Combining a visit to Suleyman Tower with other beauties of the Yumurtalık district makes the day much more productive. The suggested route can be planned as follows:

Morning: Depart early from Adana and reach Yumurtalık. As your first stop, visit Suleyman Tower and the surrounding rock tombs. Lunch: Have lunch with fresh seafood at a fish restaurant in the district center. Afternoon: Walk along the coast of Yumurtalık Bay, explore the historical texture of the district. Evening: Watch the sunset from around the tower, then return to Adana.

For those who prefer to stay in Yumurtalık, there are various guesthouses and small hotels in the district; this makes it possible to catch the tower's light at its most beautiful in the early morning hours.

Since Suleyman Tower is located in an open-air area, it is important to choose appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. The ground can be slippery when walking along the cliffs, so caution is advised.

Shade is very limited around the tower. Visitors planning a visit in the summer months are strongly advised to bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. Although admission to the tower is free, there may not be cafes or kiosks nearby, so preparing drinks and snacks would be a good idea.

Wheelchair and stroller use is difficult due to the terrain. Extra caution is recommended in areas close to the cliffs when visiting with small children.
