Bursa: A 2-Day Family Itinerary for History and Nature Exploration

Hello fellow travelers! This time, we're turning our route to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. I've prepared a wonderful 2-day, 9-stop travel plan where your family can immerse yourselves in history and nature. If you're ready, let's start getting lost in the streets of Bursa!

Bursa Khans Region

The heart of Bursa definitely beats in the Khans' Region. These commercial structures dating from the 14th-16th centuries around the Grand Mosque are like an open-air museum. With khans like Pirinç Han, Emir Han, and Bedesten, this area carries the silk trade and craft tradition of the past to the present day. Wandering through this historical bazaar with your children and seeing the artisans' handmade products will provide you with a pleasant 1-2 hours.

Emir Han

One of the oldest and most magnificent structures in the Khans' Region, Emir Han was built by Orhan Bey in the 14th century. It is considered one of the first examples of Ottoman khans. Today, it mostly houses jewelry workshops. Sitting in the historical courtyard of the khan and enjoying a cup of tea while observing the surroundings is quite pleasant. I recommend allocating 1-2 hours here as well.

Eski Aynalı Çarşı (Old Mirrored Bazaar)

Very close to Emir Han, this is an original covered bazaar converted from the hammam of the Orhan Mosque Complex. Although rebuilt after the fire in 1958, it preserves its historical atmosphere. In this bazaar, full of antique and souvenir shops, you can spend a pleasant half-hour with your family and perhaps find a special memento for yourselves.

Cumhuriyet Caddesi — Bursa's Istiklal

Cumhuriyet Caddesi, Bursa's busiest pedestrian axis, reflects the city's energy with its car-free structure and the nostalgic tram passing through its center. Starting just north of the Khans' Region, this street is a lively spot where you can shop and relax in cafes. Riding the tram will be a lot of fun for children. You can spend approximately 1-2 hours here.

Bursa City Museum

If you're curious about Bursa's 8,000-year history, this is the place for you. Located near Heykel Square, this three-story museum features wax figures of Ottoman sultans, topographical models of the city, and interactive exhibits. It's a great stop to get to know Bursa in every aspect. There are many sections that will interest children. 1-2 hours should be sufficient for the museum.

Green Mosque – Bursa

Rising in Bursa's Yeşil district, the Green Mosque, built by Sultan Mehmed I in 1419, is a rare example of early Ottoman architecture. Its interior, especially adorned with Iznik tiles, and its magnificent crown gate are truly worth seeing. This place is open for worship and can be visited free of charge. Spending half an hour in the mosque's atmosphere will do you good.

Green Tomb

Located on the hill directly opposite the Green Mosque, the Green Tomb is one of Bursa's symbols. Built by Mehmed I in 1421, this tomb stands out with its facade covered in turquoise Iznik tiles. Visitors generally love its calm and peaceful atmosphere. The tomb houses the sarcophagi of Sultan Mehmed I and his family members. You can allocate about half an hour here as well.

Irgandı Bridge

Built in 1442 over Bursa's Gökdere stream, the Irgandı Bridge is one of the rare bazaar bridges that houses shops and cafes. This approximately 600-year-old Ottoman structure stands out with both its architecture and cultural value. You can take a coffee break while watching the stream flow under the bridge and browse the small shops. You can spend about 1 hour here.

Cumalıkızık Village

You can't come to Bursa and not see Cumalıkızık! Located at the foot of Uludağ, this village, which preserves 700-year-old Ottoman civil architecture, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2014. With its narrow cobblestone streets, wooden bay-windowed houses, and unique atmosphere, it will transport you back in time. You can enjoy a pleasant 1-2 hour exploration in this place, famous for its village breakfast and gözleme.

While completing this route in Bursa, you can choose traditional delicacies in the Khans' Region or restaurants on Cumhuriyet Caddesi for lunch. For dinner, you can try the established restaurants in the Çekirge area.
