Gümüşhane, being located at an altitude of 1,150 meters above sea level, can experience a quite harsh climate. Winters are cold and snowy; during this period, Zigana Pass may sometimes close. The ideal time to visit the city is during the summer months, between June and September. During this period, the plateaus turn lush green, waterfalls flow abundantly, and plateau festivals are held.

June, July, and August are also the months for international festivals in the Kadırga, Kazıkbeli, Güvende, and Taşköprü plateaus. A visit planned to coincide with these festivals will provide you with unforgettable moments in terms of both nature and culture. Early September is also a very good option; crowds decrease, and the weather becomes cool and clear. In spring, nature revives with the melting snow; however, it is advisable to check road conditions beforehand.

Gümüşhane does not have its own airport. The nearest airports are Trabzon Airport and Erzincan Airport. It is possible to reach Gümüşhane by road from both locations; a journey of approximately 1.5-2 hours from Trabzon will get you to the city.

Road transport is the most commonly preferred option. There are regular bus services to Gümüşhane from major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Samsun, Trabzon, and Erzurum. The bus terminal is located close to the city center. Ticket prices start from around 300 TL from Trabzon and around 350 TL from Erzincan; however, these prices may vary depending on the company and the season.

In terms of train connections, Gümüşhane does not have a direct railway line. If you are coming with your own vehicle, you can reach Trabzon via the Black Sea Coastal Road, and from there, Gümüşhane via the D885 highway. This route passes through the Zigana Pass, which is a mountainous road that requires caution, especially in winter months.

Gümüşhane has a relatively small and compact city center. Within the city, municipal buses serve as the primary means of transportation. Walking is also quite feasible for short distances.

However, to reach natural and historical sites outside the city such as Karaca Cave, Tomara Waterfall, Limni Lake, and Santa Ruins, renting a car or utilizing tour vehicles is a much more practical solution. While minibus services are available from the city center to these points, it is recommended to seek assistance from local businesses or your accommodation for schedules and routes. Taxi services are also available and can be used for reasonable prices for intra-city distances.

Karaca Cave: Located in the Torul district, this cave is considered one of Turkey's largest and most magnificent caves. Resembling an underground art gallery with its stalactites and stalagmites, Karaca Cave is explored by visitors with guided tours.

Zigana Plateau and Pass: This high pass between Trabzon and Gümüşhane offers a unique experience for those who want to walk among the clouds, especially in summer. In winter, there are also skiing opportunities.

During the summer months, when plateau festivals coincide, occupancy rates may increase, so it is recommended to arrange your accommodation in advance. Small accommodation facilities are also available in the Torul district and surrounding villages. For those who want an experience intertwined with nature, plateau houses and farm stays are also occasionally preferred options.

Gümüşhane cuisine has a unique structure that blends the rich local flavors of the Black Sea with the mountain climate. Gümüşhane pestil is one of the region's most well-known and purchased products; this traditional delicacy, made from grape or mulberry extract, has become a symbol of the city.
