When to Visit Ardahan?

Ardahan is one of Turkey's coldest provinces. In winter, temperatures can drop below -20 degrees Celsius, and snowfall can last from November until the end of April. Therefore, it is important to plan your visit carefully.

Winter (December–March): This is when Lake Çıldır freezes. It is the perfect time for those who want to experience horse-drawn sleigh tours and walking on the ice. However, heavy snow can make access to some plateaus and village roads difficult; if you plan to rent a car, we recommend choosing a four-wheel drive.

Spring and Summer (May–September): The plateaus turn green, and nature walks along the Kura River become enjoyable. From mid-June to mid-July, it is possible to observe the Atatürk Silhouette from the Damal district; this window is limited to only a few weeks. Summer months are the most suitable time to visit Ardahan; the weather remains cool and fresh, and the plateaus look like a true painting.

Autumn (October–November): While it is a beautiful period with colorful forests and a calm atmosphere, the weather cools down rapidly; do not forget to bring warm clothes.

How to Get to Ardahan?

By Air: Ardahan does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is Kars Harakani Airport, approximately 89 kilometers away. After flying to Kars, you can travel to Ardahan by road; this distance corresponds to about a 1.5-hour journey. It is possible to find minibuses or taxis from Kars.

By Bus: Regular bus services to Ardahan are available from surrounding provinces such as Erzurum, Kars, Artvin, Trabzon, and Rize. While direct buses are also available from major cities, the journey time is quite long; you should expect approximately 18-20 hours from Istanbul. Ticket prices vary depending on the route and company.

By Road: If you are coming with your own vehicle, you can follow the D060 highway via Erzurum. Caution is required on this mountainous road during winter months; especially roads leading to Çıldır and Göle districts can be challenging in snowfall.

Getting Around Ardahan

Ardahan city center is quite small and can be explored on foot. However, a vehicle becomes essential to visit surrounding districts, plateaus, and natural beauties like Lake Çıldır.

Car rental: Car rental options in the city are limited; therefore, it might be more practical to rent a car from Kars or Erzurum in advance. We especially recommend choosing a four-wheel drive vehicle during winter months.

Taxi and minibus: Minibus services operate from the city center to Çıldır, Damal, and other districts; however, service hours may be limited. Transportation by taxi is also possible; it is recommended to negotiate prices in advance.

Walking: You can reach Ardahan Castle and historical sites in the city center on foot. The compact structure of the city makes your exploration of the center quite comfortable.

Places to Visit in Ardahan

Lake Çıldır: Undeniably Ardahan's most important natural beauty, this lake offers an impressive landscape with its 45-kilometer coastline and its position among Eastern Anatolia's largest lakes. Horse-drawn sleigh tours on its ice layer, which can reach up to one meter in winter, make the lake one of Turkey's unique winter experiences. In summer, it takes on a completely different appearance with its calm waters and surrounding greenery.

Şeytan Castle (Devil's Castle): This historical structure, rising on a small island in the middle of Lake Çıldır, offers one of the region's most impressive views. In winter, it is possible to reach the island by walking across the frozen lake; this experience alone is etched into memory as an unforgettable moment.

Ardahan Castle: Dating back to the Ottoman period and the 16th century, this castle is located right in the city center. Its position overlooking the Kura River makes it historically and visually interesting.

Atatürk Silhouette (Damal): Every year, only between June 15 and July 15, a shadow resembling Atatürk's profile forms on the mountain silhouette in the Damal district. Thousands of people flock to the region each year to see this natural phenomenon.

Yalnızçam Plateau: One of Ardahan's most beautiful plateaus, Yalnızçam is a perfect escape in summer with its vast meadows showcasing every shade of green and its cool air. It is ideal for camping and nature walks.

Bülbülan Plateau: Easily accessible due to its proximity to the city, this plateau is a popular spot for picnics and nature excursions. You can also experience the panoramic views characteristic of Ardahan's high plateaus here.

Stone Bridge Inscriptions: This historical bridge, located near the city center, bears important traces of the region's past with its Ottoman-era inscriptions.

Where to Stay in Ardahan?

Ardahan is a city with limited accommodation options compared to major tourism centers. However, there are various hotels and guesthouses in the city center.

City center hotels: There are a few medium-sized hotels in Ardahan center. These hotels are generally clean, functional, and reasonably priced. Do not expect large chain hotels; the accommodation experience here has a more local and intimate character.

Guesthouses and apartment rentals: For those looking for longer stays or more economical options, there are also guesthouse and apartment alternatives in the city.

Around Çıldır: There are also facilities offering accommodation on the shores of Lake Çıldır. Especially for those who want to experience the lake up close during the winter season, these facilities can be a good choice.

We recommend making reservations in advance during peak winter and summer seasons; as capacity in the city is limited, finding last-minute accommodation can be difficult.

What to Eat in Ardahan?

Ardahan cuisine consists of simple but hearty flavors based on Eastern Anatolia's harsh climate and livestock tradition. The city is one of the most important centers in the region, especially for dairy products.

Ardahan Kaşarı: The local kaşar cheese is Ardahan's most well-known gastronomic product. Produced from the milk of cows grazing on the region's high plateaus, this cheese takes pride of place on tables with its unique aroma. Be sure to buy some before leaving the city.

Meat dishes: Local restaurants stand out with various stews, kebabs, and casseroles made from lamb and beef. These calorie-rich dishes, compatible with the cold climate, are perfect for long winter days.

Local soups: Traditional soups like kelle paça (trotter soup) and işkembe çorbası (tripe soup) can be found in Ardahan's restaurants even in the early morning.

Honey and dairy products: Flower honey produced in the plateaus and local butter are also among the city's prominent flavors. Tasting these at breakfast is an integral part of the Ardahan experience.

Budget Planning in Ardahan

Ardahan is one of Turkey's relatively economical destinations. Compared to major tourism centers, accommodation, food and drink, and transportation costs remain quite reasonable.

Accommodation: Prices in city center hotels vary according to the season and facility. We can say that nightly rates in a mid-range hotel are significantly more affordable than in big cities.

Food and drink: Meal prices in local restaurants are quite accessible. You can eat hearty and delicious meals without straining your budget.

Transportation: The biggest cost item is usually transportation; especially if you are coming by bus from distant cities, ticket prices can increase. Coming by road from Kars can be a more economical option. Taxi and minibus fares within the city are reasonable.

Activities: Fees for activities such as horse-drawn sleigh tours on Lake Çıldır vary by season and operator; otherwise, most plateaus and historical areas can be entered for free.

Ardahan's Culture and History

Ardahan has a deep-rooted history dating back to the Achaemenid period. Known as Artani or Artaani, these lands have been under the rule of different civilizations for centuries; traces of Ottoman, Russian, and Georgian influences are still felt today.

Ottoman heritage: Ardahan Castle in the city center, an Ottoman structure from the 16th century, is the most important historical monument in the region. Its location on the Kura River gives it both strategic and aesthetic value.

Traces of the Russian period: Ardahan, which came under Russian rule during the Ottoman-Russian wars in the 19th century, bears some architectural traces from this period. You can feel this historical layer in some of the city's structures.

Livestock culture: Livestock farming is at the heart of Ardahan's economy and cultural identity. The plateaus are not only a tourist attraction but also a living source of livelihood. Seeing villagers going up to the plateaus in summer means confronting the region's unique way of life.

Border culture: With its proximity to the Georgian border, Ardahan carries that unique atmosphere characteristic of Turkey's eastern border cities. This border culture adds a distinct originality to the city's people and daily life.
