Halef Sultan Zawiya is a Seljuk zawiya dating back to 1291-92, located in the Meydan Neighborhood in central Tokat; it stands out with the inscription on its stone gate and its domed mosque-tomb section, and operates as a cultural center after restoration.
Halef Sultan Zawiya stands in the Meydan Neighborhood, in the city center of Tokat. There is a four-line inscription above the crown gate on the western facade. According to this, the structure was built by Halef bin Süleyman in H.691 (M.1291-92) during the reign of Sultan Gıyaseddin Mesud II. There are also Quranic inscriptions above the two windows next to the crown gate.
The plan is rectangular in a north-south direction. From the entrance hall, two vaulted rooms open to the north, and two interconnected square-plan rooms open to the south. One of these rooms was used as a mosque with its mihrab niche and window arrangement, while the adjacent square room served as a tomb. Both are covered with domes. The main space is domed, and its attached iwan is covered with a vault. The walls are made of rubble stone, the transitions to the dome and arches are brick, and the crown gate and window jambs are ashlar. The typical material usage of the Seljuk period is clearly visible here.
The structure was restored by the Tokat Regional Directorate of Foundations in 2005, and after the work was completed in 2007, it was opened to service under the name "Halef Sultan Culture House." The interior, consisting of six rooms, is now used for cultural events. It has become a stop that introduces the historical fabric of the city, occasionally visited by the Tokat governorship and local administrators.

Best Time to Visit
Since the structure is an open-air stone building, spring and autumn months are the most comfortable periods. Tokat's summer heat is felt during midday, so morning or late afternoon hours can be preferred. In winter months, indoor visits depend on the cultural center's program, so it's useful to get information beforehand.

The zawiya is located in Tokat city center, in Meydan Neighborhood. Behind the Police Department and next to Gazi Osman Paşa High School are reference points used to describe its location. It is possible to reach it by walking from the city center or by a short taxi ride. For those going by their own car, finding parking nearby is usually not a problem.

It is located close to Tokat's historical center. Since there are other Seljuk and Ottoman period structures to visit in the same area, it makes sense to plan the zawiya as part of a city center tour. It can be included in a half-day itinerary along with other historical sites within walking distance.
How Much Time to Allocate
The structure itself is not large. Examining the crown gate, inscriptions, and the interior room layout takes 20-30 minutes. Those who want to take photos might want to allocate a bit more time, especially to capture the details of the crown gate and the Quranic inscriptions above the windows.

It's easy to add the zawiya to an itinerary visiting historical structures in central Tokat. Along with other historical artifacts around Meydan Neighborhood, it can be included in a walking tour starting before noon. The area around Gazi Osman Paşa High School and the Police Department forms a natural starting point for this tour.
Good Spots for Photos
The crown gate on the western facade, with its four-line inscription, is the most striking detail. The rectangular windows on the facade and the slit windows above are also characteristic features of the structure. The side light in the afternoon brings out the rubble stone wall texture and ashlar masonry more clearly.
Things to Note
Since the structure is currently used as a cultural center, access to the interior may depend on organized events and programs. It would be beneficial to inquire about the current status from the Tokat Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before visiting, to avoid a wasted trip.
