Namık Kemal Statue

The Namık Kemal Statue was erected in 1949 in memory of Namık Kemal, the 'Poet of the Homeland,' who was born in Tekirdağ in 1840. Designed by sculptor Nusret Suman, the work is crafted from marble on a marble rectangular pedestal. The projecting moldings surrounding the pedestal reflect the monumental statue concept of the period. The statue is located in the middle of the park named after him, opposite the Government House.

The Namık Kemal Statue and the surrounding park can be visited at any time of the year. In spring and autumn, weather conditions are more favorable for both walking and photography. In summer, the park's wooded areas provide some shade. For those who want to take photos, the natural light in the afternoon yields much better results than early morning.

The statue is located in the very heart of Tekirdağ city center, between Hükümet Street and Mimar Sinan Street. It can be easily reached by taking city public transport to the center and then walking. From Istanbul, you can come to Tekirdağ by bus or private car; from the city terminal, minibus or taxi options are available to the center. For those coming by car, it is possible to find parking in the vicinity.

After visiting the Namık Kemal Statue, you can proceed to the Namık Kemal House, which is a few minutes' walk away. This house, where the poet was born in 1840, has been restored and opened to visitors in cooperation with the Tekirdağ Namık Kemal Association and Tekirdağ Municipality. This short tour connecting the two points allows you to see Namık Kemal's traces in Tekirdağ in a comprehensive way. Since the Tekirdağ Archaeology and Ethnography Museum is also in the same area, it is possible to spend the day productively in the city center.

The marble pedestal and the statue on it are suitable for distinct and shadow-free shots, especially in the natural light of the afternoon. Wide-angle photographs taken from within the park can capture both the statue and the surrounding landscaping together. Compositions using the facade of the Government House as a background can also yield interesting results.

Tekirdağ is a city known nationwide for its meatballs. There are many long-established restaurants serving Tekirdağ meatballs on the streets around Namık Kemal Park. This part of the city center is also rich in small cafes and patisseries; it is not difficult to find a place to sit and rest after your visit with a short walk.

Since the statue is outdoors and in a public area, it can be visited in all seasons; in winter months, one should be prepared for the strong winds of Thrace. There are seating areas within the park. Most of the park ground is suitable for wheelchair and stroller use.
