İbrahim Balaban Museum

İbrahim Balaban (1921–2019) is considered one of Turkey's most original naive painters. Balaban began painting in prison and developed his skills under the guidance of Nâzım Hikmet; he transferred the lives of Anatolian villagers, folk legends, and social realities onto canvas with a simple language. In addition to his identity as a painter, he also produced as a writer, dedicating his life to social realism. The museum was opened when the artist was 97 years old and still alive; Balaban passed away in 2019.

You can visit the museum on weekdays from 08:00–17:00 and on weekends from 10:00–18:00. Since it may be closed on Mondays, we recommend confirming the hours on the Süleymanpaşa Municipality's official website before your visit. It is a good stop for a cultural tour in spring and autumn, combined with other museums in Tekirdağ.

The museum is located on Sefa Street in Ertuğrul Neighborhood, Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ. After reaching the city center by minibuses departing from Tekirdağ bus station, you can walk to the museum. For those coming by car, parking around the museum is very limited; it is easier to park on the main street and walk a short distance.

The two-story historical Tekirdağ house housing the museum offers an interesting frame for photography in itself. Shots taken in front of Balaban's paintings, which stand out with their vibrant colors and original figures, can be one of the most beautiful memories of the museum visit. The garden also stands out as an area that can be used for photography.

Tekirdağ is a city known nationwide for its meatball varieties. After visiting the museum, many well-established restaurants serving Tekirdağ meatballs are within walking distance of the center. The cafes and fish restaurants along the city's coastline can also be preferred for lunch or dinner.

The İbrahim Balaban Museum can be easily visited in one day by combining it with other cultural venues in Tekirdağ. The Old Tekirdağ Photographs Museum and the Music Museum are located right next to the museum. The Tekirdağ Archaeology and Ethnography Museum is also located in the city center. Starting with the İbrahim Balaban Museum in the morning and visiting other museums in the afternoon is an effective plan to grasp Tekirdağ's cultural fabric in one day.

Due to the stairs leading to the second floor of the museum, the upper floor is not accessible for wheelchair users. The museum can sometimes be unattended; if there is no one at the door, you can call the attendant's number provided at the entrance for assistance, and they will arrive at the museum shortly. Since parking is difficult in the vicinity, consider using public transport or walking if possible.
