Divriği Castle and Mosque is a castle from the Mengujekids period located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Çaltı Stream in Divriği district of Sivas, known for its Castle Mosque built in 1180 with a stone portal; entrance is free but the path is challenging and unmarked.
Divriği Castle is situated on a cliff that descends steeply to the Çaltı Stream, north of the district center. The outer walls of the castle, built by the Mengujekids, are approximately 1 kilometer long, enclosing an area of about 400 meters in a south-north direction and 200 meters in an east-west direction. The walls, supported by square, polygonal, and circular bastions, are entered through two gates on the southwest and west sides. Today, it is largely in ruins. However, from the sections where the walls still stand tall, there is a wide view of the Divriği Plain and the surrounding mountains.
The main treasure within the castle is the Castle Mosque. Built in 1180 by Emir Ishak, son of Süleyman Shah, this structure is considered unique due to its location on the edge of a cliff and its architecture, which differs from other works of its period. It is one of the Friday mosques with a minbar built after the Turkish conquest of Anatolia. Its monumental portal is the first example of the monumental portal tradition in Anatolia and one of the starting points of stone carving art in these lands.
Visitor comments highlight the castle's view: it is described as majestic when viewed from the center, and the Çaltı Canyon can be observed from the ramparts. However, the same comments also include warnings about the difficulty of the ascent. The stairs are short and some are broken, there is no marked route, and most visitors navigate by hand along goat paths. Those who wish to visit the castle after seeing the Great Mosque should be aware that there is no direct passage between the two points, so you may need to walk back about 500 meters.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Since the castle is in an open-air area on an unsheltered hill, climbing in the midday heat during summer months can be tiring. In spring and autumn, both the temperature is more moderate and the light is more suitable for landscape photography. In winter months, the path can be slippery, so be careful.
How to Get to Divriği Castle
Divriği is approximately 180 km from Sivas city center. The Divriği turn-off on the Sivas-Malatya highway, after Kangal, is 80 km from the district. There are regular bus services from Sivas, and a railway connection is also available. However, some visitors note that the train journey between Divriği and Ankara takes 14 hours, so road travel is more practical for most. After reaching the district center, the castle is accessed by walking; vehicle access to the foot of the castle is limited.
How Much Time to Allocate at the Castle
Exploring the ramparts and the Castle Mosque takes between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours, depending on your climbing speed and photo breaks. Those visiting Divriği for a single day usually fit the Great Mosque and Hospital and the castle into the same day. However, the walking distance between the two points needs to be considered.
Route Suggestion
There is a frequent warning in visitor comments: if you visit Divriği Great Mosque before climbing to the castle, you may need to walk back approximately 500 meters to reach the castle. There is no direct passage between the two points, and security guards do not allow this passage. Therefore, climbing to the castle first and then descending to the Great Mosque is a less tiring sequence. If you have time, you can also add Divriği Museum and Nuri Demirağ Mansion to your itinerary.
Things to Pay Attention To
The castle is largely neglected; there is no marked walking route or safety measures. Visitors note that during the climb, the stairs are short and some are broken, and the remaining part is traversed by hand along goat paths. Wear sturdy shoes, and if you are going alone, check the weather conditions beforehand. Some rooms within the ramparts are also mentioned in comments as having accumulated trash. Do not expect every corner to be well-maintained.
Photo Spots
Wide shots overlooking the Çaltı Canyon and Divriği Plain can be taken from the highest sections of the rampart wall. The area around the castle is particularly favored by drone photographers; even without a drone, the majestic view of the castle from the center is a popular subject for photos. Sunset hours are a time when the light makes the stone texture more prominent.
