Ayanaga Mansion, an 1838 structure in Divriği, is a rare example of Anatolian civil architecture with its wooden ceiling craftsmanship and selamlik-harem layout; it is recommended to check if it's open before visiting.
Ayanaga Mansion often remains in the shadow of Divriği's Ulu Mosque, famous for its stone masonry, but it is a structure worth telling about on its own. Built around 1838 by Ayan Mehmet Ağa of the Karamahmudoğulları family, the mansion shows how grand and spacious the homes of the region's ayan class, or local gentry, were. Not only Divriği masters but also foremen brought from Sivas and Trabzon worked on its construction. The result is a fine craftsmanship seen in the ceiling rosettes and wooden carvings.
The mansion's original plan consisted of three sections: selamlik (men's quarters), mabeyn (intermediate section), and harem (women's quarters), connected by halls and corridors. However, time has significantly eroded this integrity: after inheritance divisions, the mansion was divided into sections, and the large divanhane (main hall) and four rooms between the selamlik and mabeyn were completely demolished. Today, only a part of the selamlik section of the building, known by eight separate door numbers, has been restored and is open to visitors. In this two-story section, the ground floor consists of stables, storage, and servant rooms; the upper floor contains rooms where visitors were hosted, with ceiling heights reaching 4.4 meters.
A frequent warning in visitor comments is that the mansion can sometimes be closed; some travelers have had to come all that way only to look at it from the outside. When it is open, the wooden ceiling details and the way light filters through the windows are praised. Even when closed, the exterior facade is considered worth seeing as an important example of Divriği architecture.

When to Visit
Divriği's accessibility becomes difficult with snow in winter, so visiting the mansion between April and October is more comfortable. In summer, both weather and road conditions are more favorable. When planning a Divriği trip that includes the Ulu Mosque, it's logical to visit the mansion in the morning; this leaves time for the bazaar and other stone artifacts in the afternoon.
How to Get There
Divriği is approximately 176 km from Sivas city center, reachable in 2.5-3 hours by private car or buses from Sivas. Once in the district, the mansion is close to the Ulu Mosque and the historic bazaar area, within walking distance. Divriği also has a train station on the Malatya-Sivas line, an alternative route for those who prefer train travel.
How Much Time to Allocate
If the mansion is open, 20-30 minutes is sufficient, as it is a small structure. However, it doesn't make sense to go all the way to Divriği just to see the mansion. Including the Ulu Mosque and Şifahane (hospital) on the same day and allocating half a day will ensure you get your money's worth for the journey.
Things to Consider
There's a recurring issue in visitor comments: the mansion is often closed, and some travelers have had to travel for hours only to take photos from the outside. Calling Divriği Municipality before heading to the town center to ask if the mansion is open that day will prevent wasted time. Even if it's closed, the exterior facade and courtyard gate are worth seeing, but adjust your expectations accordingly.

If you can enter the interior, the most striking shot is the upstairs room with a ceiling height of 4.4 meters and a wooden pinwheel motif ceiling. The hours before noon, when light filters through the windows highlighting the wooden carvings, are more suitable for photography. If you're shooting from the outside, the original double-leaf main gate and the facade facing the street are the mansion's most photogenic aspects.
The Story of the Mansion
Mehmed Ağa of Karamahmudoğlu, who had the mansion built, came from a family that served as ayans in the Divriği region; hence, the mansion is also known as Ayanoğlu Mansion in the area. The fact that masters from outside the region, especially from Sivas, worked on the construction of the building indicates an exchange of knowledge in mansion architecture of the period. Over time, due to inheritance divisions and neglect, the original three-section plan (selamlik, mabeyn, harem) lost its integrity; today, the only section that remains standing and is partially restored is the selamlik.
