Alacahan Caravanserai

The structure is an inn built during the Seljuk period to provide accommodation for travelers on the old Baghdad Silk Road. It takes its name from the alternating (sequential) black and white stones in its walls; this two-colored appearance is noticeable even from a distance. Unlike other caravanserais, it is completely enclosed, not open-courtyard. This is a winter inn type of structure. At the entrance, behind a projecting round arch, there is a low, flattened arched door. Upon entering, a wide central nave with a barrel vault extends in the middle, flanked by two large side naves.

Since the region is at a high altitude, winters are cold, and road conditions can be variable. The period between spring and autumn is more comfortable for both travel and photography. During the summer months, it's a practical option to add it to your itinerary while exploring Kangal district and its natural beauties, such as the Kangal fish springs.

From Sivas city center, follow the highway towards Malatya. After passing Kangal district, you will reach Alacahan village. The road passes near the Abdal Boğan pass. Since public transportation options are limited, driving your own car or taking a taxi from Kangal center is the most practical method. The inn is located in the village center on the old road, in an easily findable location.

Alacahan Caravanserai is more of a stop to visit on the Sivas-Malatya route or during a visit to Kangal district, rather than a standalone destination. Visiting here after exploring Kangal's famous fish springs offers a combination of history and nature without extending the route too much. For those who have seen Seljuk artifacts in Sivas city center, such as Gök Medrese or Buruciye Medrese, Alacahan is an interesting reflection of the same period in a rural setting.

The most characteristic detail of the structure is its black-and-white stone masonry. This contrast becomes more distinct, especially in the afternoon side light. The flattened arch at the entrance gate and the round arch niche behind it offer an interesting composition for close-up shots. The vaulted naves in the interior are also valuable for showing the enclosed inn plan of the structure, especially in wide-angle shots.

Since the inn is located in a rural village far from the city center, services such as cafes and markets may be limited in the vicinity. It is advisable to fill up on fuel and water before leaving Kangal. It is also beneficial to wear appropriate shoes, considering that the interior floor of the structure may be uneven and damp.
