New Ömeriye Mosque

Summers in Şanlıurfa are truly harsh; in July and August, the thermometer sometimes rises above 40 degrees Celsius. If you want to comfortably visit the New Ömeriye Mosque and its surrounding historical structures, April–May and September–October offer much more reasonable weather. During the summer, since the mosque is open until 19:00 in the evening, it's a good idea to prefer the cooler afternoon hours. If you happen to visit during crowded prayer times, such as Friday prayer, you might need to wait until the prayer finishes; this can turn into an opportunity to observe the mosque's religious atmosphere up close.

The New Ömeriye Mosque is located on Mısır Street in Kurtuluş Neighborhood, Eyyübiye District of Şanlıurfa. You can easily reach it from the city center by taxi or dolmuş. Since it is within walking distance of central tourist spots like Balıklıgöl and the Grand Bazaar, visiting it along the route while exploring the historical bazaar area is quite practical. Just follow Mısır Street while walking towards Beykapısı. After arriving at the city center from Şanlıurfa Airport by shuttle or taxi, you can reach the mosque by walking or a short car ride from there.

The New Ömeriye Mosque alone is a structure that warrants a 15–30 minute visit. This time is sufficient to examine the inscriptions, look at the architectural details, and see the interior. Since the mosque is located on the historical bazaar and Beykapısı route of Şanlıurfa, it can easily be included in a half-day walking tour with other structures in the vicinity. When planned together with Balıklıgöl, the Old Ömeriye Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, it makes for a full day's tour.

For those who want to efficiently explore Şanlıurfa's historical fabric, this route is useful: Start early in the morning with Balıklıgöl and Halil-ür Rahman Mosque, then visit the Grand Bazaar and walk towards Beykapısı. Along this route, stop by the New Ömeriye Mosque to examine its inscriptions and architectural details. In the afternoon, you can also visit the Old Ömeriye Mosque within the Tütüncü Pazarı. Seeing the two Ömeriye Mosques side by side offers an interesting comparison of Şanlıurfa's Ottoman-era religious architecture.

The Eyyübiye district and its surroundings, where the New Ömeriye Mosque is located, are close to Şanlıurfa's well-established culinary spots. After your visit, you can try çiğ köfte, lahmacun, and Urfa kebab at nearby restaurants. Urfa kebab stands out from other kebab varieties with its unique preparation blended with hot peppers. In the breakfast places in the historical bazaar area, you can find local breakfast items such as Urfa cheese, sürk, and katmer. The tea gardens around Balıklıgöl are also a good option for a break between visits.

The New Ömeriye Mosque is an active place of worship. During your visit, a headscarf and appropriate clothing are required; female visitors are expected to cover their heads, and men are expected not to wear short pants. You need to take off your shoes when entering the mosque. During prayer times, especially Friday prayer, it may not be appropriate to enter; plan your visit accordingly. Be careful not to disturb worshippers when taking photos. In Şanlıurfa's summer heat, it's important to carry water and use sunscreen.
