Hizanoğlu Mosque

Şanlıurfa is a city with extremely hot summers; temperatures can easily exceed 40 degrees Celsius in July and August. Therefore, April–May and September–October are much more comfortable options for visiting Hizanoğlu Mosque and the surrounding historical areas. Early mornings are ideal for photography and peacefully exploring the neighborhood, as they are both cooler and quieter. Keep in mind that the mosque may be crowded during Friday prayer times.

Hizanoğlu Mosque is located on 1190th Street in Şanlıurfa's Türkmeydanı Neighborhood. It is possible to reach the neighborhood from the city center by municipal buses and dolmuşes. It is also within walking distance from Balıklıgöl; you can easily include it in your itinerary while exploring the Balıklıgöl area. For those who prefer taxis or car rental, the address can be easily entered into navigation. Since the city's historical center is pedestrian-friendly, it can be planned on foot along with other historical points in the region.

Instead of visiting Hizanoğlu Mosque alone, it is much more efficient to include it in an itinerary with the historical areas around Balıklıgöl. You can start early in the morning from Balıklıgöl, visit Halil-ül Rahman Mosque and the Cave of Prophet Abraham, then move to Türkmeydanı Neighborhood for a short break at Hizanoğlu Mosque. From there, you can continue towards Gümrük Hanı and the Grand Bazaar and have lunch in a historical place. This route takes approximately half to a full day.

For those who only want to visit the city center, 1.5–2 days will suffice. If surrounding destinations like Göbeklitepe, Harran, and Halfeti are to be added to the program, at least 3 days should be allocated. Neighborhood points like Hizanoğlu Mosque can easily fit into the day allocated for the city center. Planning half a day for Göbeklitepe, half a day for Harran, and a separate day for Halfeti is a logical approach.

Şanlıurfa cuisine is one of Turkey's most unique regional cuisines. There are many local restaurants around Hizanoğlu Mosque and near Balıklıgöl. Urfa kebab (spicy and grilled over coals), liver kebab, lahmacun, and çiğ köfte are among the must-try delicacies. For breakfast, there are also small establishments in the area offering a simple Turkish breakfast with Urfa-style clotted cream and honey. Local spices and tahini-molasses pairs can also be bought from small shops around the historical bazaar.

Hizanoğlu Mosque is an active place of worship. During your visit, it is necessary to pay attention to prayer times and respect the privacy of those worshipping. Shoes must be removed when entering the mosque; female visitors are expected to cover their heads. Choosing modest and simple clothing is important for both respect and a comfortable visit. When taking photos, be careful to keep a distance from those worshipping. Don't forget to bring a water bottle with you in Şanlıurfa's summer heat.

Hizanoğlu Mosque and its surroundings offer a beautiful setting for photographs reflecting Şanlıurfa's traditional stone architecture. It is possible to capture unique shots while walking through the narrow streets of Türkmeydanı Neighborhood, among houses made of yellow cut stone. Early mornings are the most suitable time for photography due to soft light and quiet streets. Photos taken from outside the mosque, along with the neighborhood texture, best reflect the city's historical atmosphere. This area makes a nice additional stop on a photo tour combined with Balıklıgöl.
