Rizvaniye Madrasah

Rizvaniye Madrasah is a historical structure built in 1736 by Ridvan Ahmet Pasha, the Governor of Raqqa, forming a complex (külliye) with the Rizvaniye Mosque in Şanlıurfa's Balıklıgöl region. The madrasah, which carries the tradition of classical Ottoman educational structures with its cells surrounding the mosque's courtyard, is open to visitors today, although it no longer functions as an active educational institution, and continues to be an integral part of the region's historical and religious fabric.

The area where the mosque was built is known to have been a Byzantine-era church site. This historical layering makes the structure a witness not only to the Ottoman heritage but also to a much deeper past. Thanks to its location in the middle of the Balıklıgöl plateau, the madrasah, together with the lake and the mosque, forms a visually powerful whole.

Şanlıurfa is a city with extremely hot summers; temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in mid-summer. Therefore, the most suitable periods to visit Rizvaniye Madrasah and the Balıklıgöl region are April–May and September–October. The weather is pleasant for walking, and the lighting conditions are excellent for photography during these periods.

As for the time of day, early mornings are when the crowds have not yet intensified, and you can better feel the tranquility of the lake and the mosque. The area can be quite crowded during Friday prayer times; it is advisable for those planning a visit during these hours to take this into account.

Rizvaniye Madrasah is located very close to Şanlıurfa city center. You can reach it quickly by shared taxis (dolmuş) or taxis heading towards Balıklıgöl from the city center. If you are staying in a hotel within walking distance, you can also walk the route from the historical bazaar to Balıklıgöl; this path offers a delightful experience in itself.

For those arriving by private car, finding parking in the area can be difficult during the day. Especially on weekends and holidays, it would be much more practical to arrive early or prefer public transportation. After reaching the city center from Şanlıurfa Airport by taxi or airport transfer, it is easy to transfer to Balıklıgöl.

While Rizvaniye Madrasah is worth visiting on its own, the real pleasure comes from exploring it along with the surrounding structures. You can start on the Balıklıgöl plateau and walk along the edge of Halilürrahman Lake, then visit the Rizvaniye Mosque and Madrasah. A few steps from here is the cave believed to be the birthplace of Prophet Abraham; I recommend including this cave, an important stop for religious tourism, in your itinerary.

In the region, Aynzeliha Lake and the historical structures around it can also be added to your list of places to visit. All these points are within walking distance of each other. You can continue your day by tasting Şanlıurfa cuisine at nearby restaurants during lunchtime.

The area around Balıklıgöl is Şanlıurfa's busiest tourist region, so dining options are quite extensive. Local delicacies such as Şanlıurfa kebab, çiğ köfte (raw meatballs), içli köfte (stuffed meatballs), and katmer (flaky pastry) can be found in the restaurants here. Having an Urfa-style breakfast at the breakfast spots nearby in the morning provides a great start to the day.

Sitting in the tea gardens by Balıklıgöl and sipping tea while watching the lake has also become an indispensable part of the visit. Local şıra (grape juice) and menengiç coffee (terebinth coffee) are also among the beverages that must be tried.

Rizvaniye Madrasah and Mosque offer a rich area for photography. Angles where Halilürrahman Lake and the mosque are seen together yield truly powerful shots, especially in the morning and late afternoon light. The mosque's monumental gates and its unique minaret are also interesting elements for detailed photography.

Reflections on the lake's surface allow you to capture excellent symmetrical compositions on calm mornings. The stone craftsmanship and arched passages in the madrasah's courtyard corridors also contain valuable details for architectural photography. If you plan to use a drone, you may need to obtain permission from the local authorities beforehand.

Since Rizvaniye Mosque is an active place of worship, it is necessary to observe religious rules during your visit. Female visitors are expected to cover their heads and avoid wearing short clothing. It may not be appropriate to enter the mosque during prayer times; it is advisable to plan your visit accordingly.

The region receives a very high number of visitors on weekends and holidays. For those seeking a quieter experience, weekday mornings are much more suitable. There may be vendors around; bargaining over prices when shopping is common.
