Şehbenderiye Mosque

Şehbenderiye Mosque is located in Topçu Square in Şanlıurfa's Haliliye district. This Ottoman-era structure, with its location in the historical center of the city, is a place of worship and culture situated right in the midst of daily life. One of the most striking features of the mosque is its total of four inscriptions; the inscription on the outer gate was written by the poet Emin from Urfa. Şanlıurfa's summers are quite hot and dry; midday temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius in July-August. The ideal period to visit the city is March–May and September–November. Since Şehbenderiye Mosque is in an open location in Topçu Square, visiting in the early morning or late afternoon in summer would be much more enjoyable.

It is possible to come to the city center from Şanlıurfa Airport by taxi or airport shuttles. From the bus terminal, Topçu Square can be easily reached by public transportation. Exploring by foot is much more practical as driving in the city center can cause traffic and parking problems.

Şehbenderiye Mosque can be visited as part of the busy sightseeing route in Şanlıurfa's historic center. A suggested route could be: Balıklıgöl → Dergâh Mosque (Mevlid-i Halil) → Rizvaniye Mosque and Madrasah → Şehbenderiye Mosque → Topçu Square → Covered Bazaar → Bedesten. This itinerary can be completed on foot in half a day.

The city's symbol, çiğ köfte (Urfa style, spicy), lahmacun, kebab varieties, and katmer are among the main delicacies. Small restaurants and kebab shops around the historical bazaar and Gümrük Han offer authentic Urfa cuisine at affordable prices.

For breakfast, the city's famous simit and cheese duo, along with spicy appetizers made from Urfa pepper, stand out. For an afternoon Turkish coffee or tea break, the courtyard of Gümrük Han is an ideal stop.

Şehbenderiye Mosque is an active place of worship. During your visit, it is necessary to be quiet and respectful, and to be careful when entering the interior during prayer times. Female visitors are expected to cover their heads and wear clothes that cover their shoulders and knees; headscarves can usually be provided at the mosque.

Shoes are removed at the entrance. Photography is generally allowed, but photos of people praying should not be taken. The mosque can be visited free of charge; no entrance fee is required.
