Nakibzade Madrasah

Şanlıurfa is one of Turkey's hottest cities. In summer, thermometers can exceed 40 degrees Celsius; therefore, April–May or September–October offer a much more comfortable experience for visiting Nakibzade Madrasah and its surrounding historical structures. During these periods, the weather is mild, and the crowds are relatively smaller.

If you must go in the summer, choose the early morning hours, preferably between 08:00–10:00. Staying outdoors for a long time in the afternoon can be quite tiring. During Ramadan, the city's historical center gains a completely different atmosphere; this can also be a beautiful experience for those who wish to visit during this time.

Nakibzade Madrasah is located in Camikebir Quarter, the historical center of Şanlıurfa, to the east of the Great Mosque. It is possible to reach the area from the city's main transportation points by city minibuses and dolmuşes. It can also be easily reached by walking from Balıklıgöl; the distance between the two points is quite short.

After arriving at the city center from Şanlıurfa Airport by taxi or airport shuttle, you can explore the historical center on foot. If you are coming by car, you can use the parking areas around Balıklıgöl and then walk to the madrasah.

Instead of planning Nakibzade Madrasah as a standalone stop, it is much more efficient to include it in an itinerary covering the city's historical center. Start early in the morning at Balıklıgöl; after drinking tea by the lake and watching the fish, visit the Halil-ür Rahman Mosque and the Mevlid-i Halil Cave.

Then, pass by the Rizvaniye Mosque and stop at Nakibzade Madrasah. From here, walk to the Great Mosque. At lunchtime, head to the historical bazaar and eat something from Şanlıurfa cuisine; you are at the right place for kebab and çiğköfte. If you have energy in the afternoon, you can plan a visit to Şanlıurfa Museum or Göbeklitepe.

The historical center where Nakibzade Madrasah is located also hosts Şanlıurfa's most established dining venues. Urfa kebab, famous for its spicy flavor, is a must-try. Çiğköfte, lahmacun, and katmer are also among the city's iconic tastes.

Small restaurants located within and around the historical bazaar usually offer authentic flavors at affordable prices. In the morning, don't skip Urfa breakfast; this breakfast, prepared with various cheeses, butter, and warm bread, provides a great start to the day.

Nakibzade Madrasah features one of the finest examples of Urfa's characteristic yellow-beige cut stone. The facade and stone masonry of the building offer impressive shots, especially in the soft morning light. The madrasah's door arch and inscription details can be good subjects for close-up photography.

The surrounding narrow streets and historical texture also provide rich material for photography. While walking through this historical corridor between Balıklıgöl and the Great Mosque, you can find many opportunities for street photography. The golden hues of the stones at sunset add a unique depth to photos taken in this area.

As the madrasah is a religious and historical structure, it is important to adopt a respectful attitude during your visit. Please dress appropriately. Since the building is located within Şanlıurfa's dense historical fabric, the surrounding streets can be quite narrow and crowded.

In summer, always carry water with you; thirst can quickly set in while exploring the historical center on foot. Keep in mind that visiting hours change seasonally and consult local sources for up-to-date information. Since the sidewalks around the madrasah may be uneven, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes.
