Yelli Mosque

Yelli Mosque is part of the Yelli Complex, located east of the Ancient City of Beçin in the Milas district of Muğla. The structure, notable for its square-planned single-domed sanctuary and cross vault, was built by architect Hasan bin Abdullah in the 14th-15th centuries. The craftsmanship of its mihrab and its marble minbar make it stand out among the small-scale religious structures of its period. The mosque, mentioned by Evliya Çelebi for its sky-blue tiles during his visit to Milas, stands as a concrete example of Anatolian Seljuk and early Ottoman transitional architecture.

The structure, which remained in ruins for years, has been restored and reopened for worship. Since 2012, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List along with the Ancient City of Beçin. This situation reveals the importance of the mosque not only religiously but also culturally and historically.

The most suitable periods to visit Milas and its surroundings are April-June and September-November. The region can be quite hot in the summer months; especially in July and August, staying outdoors for long periods during midday can be tiring. If you plan to visit with Beçin Ancient City, choosing the early morning hours will protect you from the heat and allow for a more peaceful visit.

Yelli Mosque is approximately 2 km from Milas city center. It can be easily reached by private car by heading in the direction of Beçin Ancient City. Taking a taxi from Milas is also a practical option. On routes combined with a visit to Beçin Ancient City, the mosque can naturally be included in the itinerary. Milas can be reached from Muğla city center by regular bus services.

Including Yelli Mosque in an itinerary with the Ancient City of Beçin offers a much more efficient travel experience than visiting it alone. The mosque, located east of the ancient city, is a natural extension of the Beçin visit. In a half-day program, you can explore both the ancient city and the Yelli Complex. Milas's historical bazaar and other Ottoman-era structures can also be seen on the same day.

The simple but impressive dome silhouette of Yelli Mosque offers a highly suitable view for photography, especially during the soft light of morning and afternoon hours. The marble craftsmanship of the mihrab and minbar are interesting subjects for detailed photography inside.
