Köyceğiz Lake

The best time to visit Köyceğiz Lake is between April–June and September–October. During these months, the weather is not yet oppressive, boat tours can be done comfortably, and the lake surroundings remain green. In July and August, the region becomes quite crowded; temperatures can rise to 35–40 degrees Celsius. In winter, the lake takes on a calm and pristine appearance, but boat tour services may be limited.

For those who want to see caretta caretta turtles, the period from May–September is the most suitable time; these months coincide with the breeding and nesting season.

The most practical way to reach Köyceğiz district is by private car. A drive of approximately 55 km, or 50–55 minutes, from Muğla city center via the D400 highway is sufficient. It takes about 1.5 hours from Fethiye and about 1 hour from Marmaris.

For those preferring public transport, there are regular minibus (dolmuş) services to Köyceğiz from Fethiye, Marmaris, and Muğla. Once you reach the district center, the lake shore and pier are within walking distance. The nearest airport is Dalaman Airport; there is approximately 30–35 km distance from there to Köyceğiz.

Boat tours departing from Köyceğiz pier usually follow this route: Köyceğiz Lake → Dalyan Canal → Kaunos Ancient City rock-cut royal tombs → Sultaniye Thermal Springs → İztuzu Beach. This full-day tour allows you to see the most important points of the region in one go.

İztuzu Beach is a protected nesting area for caretta caretta turtles. During the breeding season (May–September), certain sections and hours of the beach are closed to visitors; adhering to the rules is important both as a legal obligation and for the protection of wildlife.

On boat tours, bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water to protect against sunstroke. Mosquito density may increase in the reedy areas of the Dalyan Canal; it is recommended to use protective lotion in the evening.
