Yoğurtçu Castle is a historical castle located on a hill overlooking the Gediz Plain in Manisa's Yunusemre district, consisting of walls built with Khorasan mortar dating back to the 12th-13th century Byzantine period. Admission is free.
Located approximately 20 kilometers from Manisa city center, near Uzunburun neighborhood, Yoğurtçu Castle is dated to the late 12th and early 13th centuries in the region. Built by the Byzantines as an outpost against Turkish raids and also known as Neokastron, meaning "new castle" in Greek, the structure has managed to survive to this day with its walls built with Khorasan mortar. There is a local legend about the origin of its name: visitors report that the castle got its name because the nomadic Yörüks living in the area used to sell yogurt here.
When you climb to the top of the castle, a flat area of approximately 500 square meters greets you; from here, you can see almost the entire Gediz Plain. Visitors highlight this panoramic view as the most impressive moment of the trip. Since the structure has not yet undergone any restoration, the walls are partially ruined, and there are deep pits and large fallen stones inside; it is necessary to be careful while walking. It is also possible to encounter mountain goats along the path from time to time. However, there is a frequently mentioned problem in visitor comments: barbecue remains and abandoned garbage continue to be the biggest shadow over this historical site.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
For visiting Yoğurtçu Castle, the period of March-May is by far the best option. The area around the hill turns green, the weather is mild, and the climb to the castle is enjoyable. The first months of autumn are also beautiful, but they cannot be compared to the freshness of spring.
In mid-summer, especially during July-August, keep in mind that there is no shade on the hill, and the harsh Aegean sun feels quite scorching here. If you plan to go, prefer the early morning hours or late afternoon. In winter months, the roads can be muddy and slippery.
How to Get There?
To reach the castle, which is approximately 20 km from Manisa city center, a private car is the most logical choice. Follow the road to Uzunburun Neighborhood, and when you see the white sign at the village turnoff, you are on the right track. At one point along the way, you may need to pass through a stone quarry area; don't be surprised by this, the road continues.
There are visitor experiences indicating that navigation applications sometimes direct to dead-end stream beds or wrong routes. Therefore, it is healthier to follow the signs rather than blindly trusting the application. You can park your car in a flat area near the castle.
Visit Route
The path from the parking area to the castle is slightly uphill and covered with large stones in places. Sturdy shoes are essential. During the climb, pay attention to large pieces of stone falling from the castle walls.
When you reach the top, a flat area of approximately 500 square meters greets you. From here, you can see almost the entire Gediz Plain; this is exactly the breathtaking view that visitors describe. There are deep pits and collapsed sections inside the castle; this is a detail you need to consider if you are coming with children. The entire visit takes 1-2 hours.
Photo Spots
The flat area on top of the castle is the best shooting spot for panoramic photos of the Gediz Plain. A wide-angle lens or your phone camera's panorama mode will be useful here.
The walls built with Khorasan mortar and the ruined arches also offer powerful compositions. The light is softer in the morning; in the middle of the day, the harsh sun flattens the texture of the stones too much. In spring, the surrounding greenery creates a beautiful contrast with the castle ruins.
Things to Know Before You Go
No facilities: There are no cafes, toilets, seating areas, or shaded spots around the castle. Make sure to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen with you. If you plan to picnic, it is recommended to bring foldable chairs and a table.

Safety: There are deep pits and unstable piles of stones inside the castle. Close supervision is essential if you are coming with children. Those planning a solo visit are advised to inform a loved one of their whereabouts.
