Karakas Mansion is a two-story adobe Ottoman mansion with a Hilani plan type, built in Malatya city center between 1875-1880; it reflects 19th-century Malatya life with its iwan-fronted courtyard and bay-windowed main room.
Karakas Mansion was built by Hacı Mustafa Efendi, son of Karakaşlı Mehmet Efendi, between 1875 and 1880. In its early years, a large family lived here: Hacı Mustafa Efendi, his mother, his elder brother's sons and their wives, along with his seven children born later. Over time, the house became crowded, and this life continued first with Hacı Mustafa Efendi's own family, and then with the families of his sons Ahmet and Şevket.
The building has a rectangular plan, is of the Hilani plan type, and is made of adobe. The roof of the two-story mansion was originally flat but was later converted into a tiled hip roof. The facade facing the courtyard has an iwan. On the ground floor, there is a sofa called 'taşlık', a winter room with 'tahtıbek' cupboards and a fireplace, a pantry, and bedrooms. The upper floor is accessed by a wooden staircase; the rooms here are arranged for summer use, with the bay-windowed (şahnişli) main room being particularly noteworthy.
The building has been restored and registered as an immovable cultural property in 1989. The number of visitors is low, with one comment noting 'I guess it's not visited much'. This makes the mansion a quiet stop to explore. It is an easily accessible spot in the city center for those who want to see Malatya's traditional mansion architecture up close.

The Story of Karakas Mansion

When it was first built, the house was crowded: Hacı Mustafa Efendi lived there with his mother, his elder brother's two sons, two daughters-in-law, and his seven children born later. Over time, the family downsized, and the house remained solely for Hacı Mustafa Efendi's nuclear family. After his death, his eldest son Ahmet and youngest son Şevket continued to live in this mansion with their own families.
