Meriç ve Tunca Nehirleri, Edirne'yi çevreleyen iki su yolu olup, kıyılarında ücretsiz yürüyüş ve 15. Yüzyıldan kalma taş köprülerle şehrin doğal dokusunu oluşturur.
These two rivers are why Edirne is called the "City of Waters." The Meriç originates in Bulgaria, enters Turkey from the Edirne border, and then forms part of the border between Turkey and Greece. The Tunca flows through the city and merges with the Meriç. Both rivers wind around the city. This is why wherever you go in Edirne, you'll encounter a bridge or a riverside walk.
After crossing the Meriç Bridge, you reach Karaağaç; the recreational areas here are integrated with the river. The historic stone bridges over the Tunca are worth seeing on their own. Some date back to the 15th century, are still standing, and are in use. Those who want to unwind after a long day come down to the riverbank in the late afternoon, and some visitors say that walking along the river at sunset is the most peaceful moment of exploring the city.
This area is not a definitive museum or monument, but rather part of the city's natural fabric. Combined with the historical ruins in Sarayiçi, boat tours, and riverside tea gardens, it transforms into a half-day stopover point.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking along the river. Even in the summer heat, going down to the riverbank in the late afternoon is refreshing. Sunset is preferred, especially when viewed from the bridges over the Tunca, due to the reflection of light on the water.
How to Get There
It is possible to reach the riverbank from Edirne city center by public transport or on foot. After crossing the Meriç Bridge, you arrive at the Karaağaç neighborhood; this crossing is short enough to be done on foot.
Location within the City
The Tunca River flows through the city center and surrounds the Sarayiçi area. The Meriç flows outside the city, crossed via a bridge when going to the Karaağaç side. The two merge on the south side of Edirne.
How Much Time to Allocate
1-2 hours are sufficient just to walk along the river and see the bridges. Those who want to take a boat tour or have a long lunch break in Karaağaç can allocate half a day.
Suggested Route
After visiting Selimiye Mosque and Eski Mosque, go down to the Tunca riverbank, cross one of the stone bridges, and visit the historical ruins in Sarayiçi. Then, cross the Meriç Bridge and take a break in Karaağaç. Buildings with old Greek architecture can also be seen here.
Photo Spots
The historic stone bridges over the Tunca offer a good frame for photography, especially in the evening light. The view looking at the river from the Meriç Bridge is also preferred by those who want to capture a wide shot.
Things to Note
Since the Meriç River flows in a border region, there are military zones in some sections; it is necessary not to go outside the marked areas. If you are planning a boat tour, confirm the current hours and fees on site.
