Mecidiye Bridge is a stone bridge over the Meriç River connecting Edirne to Karaağaç. Its construction began in 1842 during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid and was completed in 1847. It is 263 meters long, 7 meters wide, and consists of 12 pointed arches resting on 13 piers. It has a slightly inclined profile towards the sides. The relief openings between the piers are designed to reduce the pressure of the water on the bridge during flood periods of the river.
In the middle of the bridge stands a pavilion with a marble inscription. Sources also mention a mirrored vaulted canopy opposite this pavilion, where sultans watched the sunset. The figurative stone decorations on the bridge hold a special place in Ottoman decorative art. In this respect, it is regarded not merely as a passage structure, but as a work demonstrating the stone craftsmanship of its era.
Today, the bridge is still in use, preferred for crossing from Edirne to Karaağaç on foot or by vehicle. Together with the tea gardens and walking areas along the Meriç riverbank, it forms a good route for an evening stroll.
Guide's Note
What is Mecidiye Bridge?
Mecidiye Bridge is also known as Meriç Bridge. This stone bridge connecting Edirne to the Karaağaç district was started in 1842 during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid and completed in 1847. The structure, resting on 12 pointed arches, was made resistant to the flood pressure of the river with relief openings between the piers. The marble-inscribed pavilion in the middle is the most striking part of the bridge.
Best Time to Visit
Since the bridge is an open-air structure, it can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn months are more comfortable for walking, as it is neither too hot nor too cold. Near sunset, the way the light hits the river surface and the stone arches creates a different view. Those who want to take photos can prefer this time.
How to Get There?
The bridge is located on the Edirne-Karaağaç road. It can be reached quickly by car from the city center, and public transportation also passes near the route. If the weather is suitable, you can also walk from Edirne center; the road along the Meriç riverbank makes this walk enjoyable.
How Much Time Should You Allocate?
20-40 minutes is sufficient to visit the bridge and take photos. If you plan to cross to the Karaağaç side and sit in the tea gardens along the Meriç riverbank, you can extend this period up to an hour.
Where to Place it in Your Itinerary?
Mecidiye Bridge is a logical point to visit after central stops in Edirne such as Selimiye Mosque and Old Mosque, on the route to Karaağaç. It can be combined with other stops in Karaağaç, such as the Lausanne Monument and the historic train station.
Photo Spots
The marble-inscribed pavilion in the middle of the bridge and the reflection of the arches on the river are among the most preferred shots. The angle looking at the bridge from the Karaağaç side is suitable for taking a shot that shows all 12 arches.
Things to Pay Attention To
The bridge is still open to vehicle traffic, so it is necessary to be careful on the sides when walking. Crossing with a wheelchair or stroller is not comfortable; the stone ground and inclined structure are not suitable for such uses.
