Saatli Mosque (Ayos Ianni Church)

Saatli Mosque was built in 1850 by the Greek community of Ayvalık under the name Ayos Ianni (Saint John) Church. Some sources also mention 1791 as the construction date; there is no definitive consensus on this. After the proclamation of the Republic, with the Turkish-Greek population exchange, the Greek population left the region, and the structure was converted into a mosque.

During this process, the church's bell tower was transformed into a clock tower, giving the structure a new function, and the building took its current name from this. Visitors may notice that the later added clock does not perfectly align with the original architecture; this situation concretely reveals the traces of the transformation. Sources also state that there is a tomb, a graveyard, and a fountain in the mosque courtyard.

The structure has a transverse rectangular plan and was built with a mixed construction technique using cut stone and rubble stone together with brick in places. The wooden ceiling, high side windows from the church period, and spacious interior still preserve the original Greek church character of the building today.

The later added minaret and clock tower represent the Ottoman-Turkish period layers of the building. Seeing the architectural traces of two different cultures in a single structure is the most distinctive feature that sets Saatli Mosque apart from other historical buildings in Ayvalık.

Ayvalık is a district with heavy tourist traffic in the summer months. If you want to see Saatli Mosque in a calmer environment, you can choose April-May or October-November. During these periods, the weather is milder, and the crowd in the bazaar is relatively reduced.

Since the mosque is an active place of worship, it may not be appropriate to enter during prayer times. Planning your visit during the hours between daily prayers would be more appropriate both to show respect for worship and to explore the structure more comfortably.

Saatli Mosque is located in İsmet Paşa Mahallesi, in the very center of the Ayvalık district center. Ayvalık can be reached from Balıkesir city center by approximately 1.5-hour bus services. There are also regular bus connections from İzmir.

After arriving at Ayvalık center, the mosque is within walking distance; it can be easily found within the bazaar. If you come by car, finding parking around the bazaar can be difficult; it is recommended to leave your car in nearby parking lots and walk.

The most interesting photographic angle of the structure is the exterior facade showing the clock tower and the minaret together. For this, you can try one of the narrow streets opposite the mosque; using a wide-angle lens is an advantage here.

Inside, the wooden ceiling and the light filtering through the high windows create beautiful compositions, especially at noon. When taking photos in the prayer area, remember to show respect to other visitors and those praying.

The famous Ayvalık bazaar is located right around Saatli Mosque. Ayvalık toast, olive oil appetizers, and fresh seafood are among the prominent flavors of the region. Small cafes and patisseries in the bazaar are ideal for a short break.

Ayvalık olive oil and olives have a geographically recognized designation throughout Turkey; buying local olive oil products from the shops in the bazaar can also be a nice part of the visit.

Saatli Mosque is an active place of worship. When entering, you are expected to take off your shoes, women should cover their heads, and silence should be maintained during prayer times. Coming with appropriate clothing will make the visit smoother.

Visitor comments include negative notes regarding the cleanliness of the restrooms; we recommend adjusting your expectations accordingly. It is stated that there is water inside the mosque on hot summer days; this can provide a small relief during long walking tours.
