Hamidiye Mosque

The Hamidiye Mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid Han II, and the mosque's inscription clearly states the contribution of the sultan and his son to this structure. This building, dating from the late Ottoman period, constitutes one of the rare examples of the eclectic style reflecting the architectural understanding of the era in Balıkesir. With its form differing from traditional Ottoman mosque architecture, it attracts the attention of researchers and architectural enthusiasts.

Restoration work was carried out by the Balıkesir Regional Directorate of Foundations, and after its completion, the mosque was reopened for worship. Today, it continues to function as an active place of worship.

The most distinctive feature of the mosque is that it was built of red cut stone. This choice visually distinguishes it from other historical mosques in the region. The eclectic style incorporates influences from different periods and geographies, alongside classical Ottoman architecture. The mosque, notable for its four-cornered structure, offers a spacious atmosphere inside despite appearing small in size.

The most comfortable times to visit this mosque, which can be visited throughout the year, are the spring and autumn months. Visitors note that heating, especially in the section reserved for women, can be insufficient during winter months; it is recommended to adjust your clothing accordingly in cold weather.

Since congregation density will increase during prayer times, hours between prayer times will be more suitable for those who wish to quietly examine the mosque's interior architecture.

The Hamidiye Mosque is located on Tabuk Street in the Akıncılar neighborhood of Balıkesir city center. Thanks to its proximity to the city center, it is possible to reach it on foot. There is one point for those coming by car to note: parking space next to the mosque is limited, and you may need to look for parking on surrounding streets.

The mosque's red cut stone facade makes a beautiful backdrop for photographs, especially during hours with good daylight. To capture the entire exterior facade, shooting from the opposite sidewalk yields better results. Inside, dome and mihrab details can be considered interesting photographic elements; if there are worshippers, care must be taken to respect their privacy when taking photos.

The Hamidiye Mosque is an active place of worship. Traditional mosque rules apply during visits: women are expected to cover their heads, shoes should be removed at the entrance, and worshippers should not be disturbed during prayer times. Wearing appropriate attire upon entering the mosque is important for respect.
