Side Ancient City

Side is one of the best-preserved port cities in the Pamphylia region. Founded in the 7th century BC, the city became a major trade and cultural center, especially during the Roman period. Thanks to its location on a peninsula, the city's main structures are still standing today and are intertwined with the modern Side village. Visitors can walk in the shadow of 2000-year-old columns and look out at the sea a few steps away; this makes Side different from an ordinary archaeological site.

Prominent structures in the city include the Temple of Apollo, the Roman theater, the agora, the nymphaeum (monumental fountain), the ancient harbor, and the city's main street. Side Museum is housed in an old Roman bath building and has a rich collection of sculptures and small finds discovered in the region.

The most suitable periods to visit Side are April-June and September-October. During these periods, the weather is suitable for sightseeing, and you will experience a calmer visit compared to the crowded summer season. In July and August, the region experiences a heavy influx of tourists from both domestic and international sources; temperatures can reach 38-40 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. In summer months, always start your visit between 08:00-10:00 AM and take a break in the shade in the afternoon.

In winter months, Side takes on the appearance of a quiet village; many businesses close, but you will have the opportunity to explore the ancient ruins almost by yourself. The weather is generally mild and sunny, though there may be rainy days.

There are several options to reach Side from Antalya Airport. If you prefer public transportation, you first need to go to Antalya city center or directly to Manavgat bus station, and from there, take a minibus (dolmuş) to Side. The journey between Manavgat and Side takes approximately 20 minutes, and services are frequent.

For those arriving by car, there are ample parking areas at the entrance of Side. Since cars are not allowed into the village, you need to park here and enter on foot; this actually allows you to explore the ancient city more comfortably. The drive from Antalya city center takes about 1 hour, and from Manavgat city center, it takes 20-25 minutes.

To explore Side efficiently, you can follow this order: Start early in the morning with the ancient theater, then proceed along the main street, passing the ruins of the agora and nymphaeum. At the end of the street, you will reach the Temple of Apollo overlooking the sea; those who want to be here at sunset can save this spot for the evening.

Before noon, visit the Side Museum; the sculptures and mosaics exhibited in the Roman bath building are truly remarkable. In the afternoon, you can walk around the ancient harbor and explore the coastline. Ending the day with the sunset view from the Temple of Apollo is one of the most preferred experiences in Side.

There are many restaurants and cafes within Side village and around the harbor. Fresh seafood, Mediterranean mezes, and local Turkish cuisine options stand out. Restaurants set up right next to ancient columns offer a unique atmosphere; however, as it is a tourist area, prices are higher compared to Manavgat center.

If you want to stick to your budget, you can opt for small local eateries within the village or in Manavgat bazaar. In Manavgat, fish restaurants and pide salons frequented by locals offer more affordable alternatives. Stalls selling freshly squeezed pomegranate juice are also quite common in Side.

Side's most iconic photography spot is undoubtedly the Temple of Apollo. The columns rising towards the sea offer magnificent views, especially during the golden hour (approximately one hour before sunset). From the rocky platform directly in front of the temple, you can capture both the temple and the open sea in the same frame.

Wide-angle shots of the Side peninsula and the sea from the upper rows of the ancient theater are also very popular. The column rows on the main street offer beautiful frames, especially in the morning light. The sculptures in the courtyard of the Side Museum are an interesting option for those looking for a different atmosphere.

Since the ancient city is largely an open-air site, it is essential to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat; especially in summer months, do not skip these precautions. As the ground is mostly paved or uneven, choose comfortable walking shoes.

During the summer season, some structures can get very crowded; choosing early morning hours will help you avoid the heat and have a calmer visit.
