Eskicioğlu Mosque

Eskicioğlu Mosque is located in the historical core of Ankara, in the Hacı Bayram Neighborhood of the Altındağ district. The structure dates back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries in terms of its architectural features. According to sources, the mosque previously existing in this area was demolished in 1743; the current structure, which we can visit today, was built in its place.

The mosque is an authentic example of the traditional Anatolian neighborhood mosque type, with its adobe walls built on a stone base, wooden beams, and a tiled roof. The harim, entered through a simple door at the northern end, offers an unpretentious yet intimate atmosphere. The wooden minaret of the structure is the most distinctive architectural element that sets it apart from similar period structures in the region.

Most of the year is suitable for visiting Eskicioğlu Mosque. In spring and autumn, weather conditions make it easier to walk through the historic streets of Ankara and photograph the exterior of the mosque. In summer, the area can be quite hot at noon; it would be more appropriate to choose early morning or late afternoon hours.

Since it is an active place of worship, planning a visit during Friday prayer times may not be very suitable. You can examine the structure much more comfortably outside of prayer times. During Ramadan, the area becomes lively in the evenings; the atmosphere takes on a completely different character.

Eskicioğlu Mosque stands at a point close to the Hacı Bayram Mosque and the surrounding historical fabric in the historical center of Ankara. It is possible to reach it by walking from the Ulus or Hacı Bayram stops of the Ankara metro; the walking time is approximately 5–10 minutes.

For those arriving by private car, parking space in the area is quite limited. Choosing public transport is both more practical and much less stressful. The Ulus area can also be easily reached from Ankara city center bus lines.

Eskicioğlu Mosque is an interesting structure for photography with its simple but original architecture. The wooden minaret, especially in the morning and evening hours, provides beautiful shots with soft light. The stone-based exterior facade and adobe wall texture of the mosque are very suitable for detailed photos reflecting the historical atmosphere.

The narrow street where the structure is located reveals the traditional Ankara neighborhood texture; it is also possible to take wide-angle shots with the surrounding buildings. Early morning hours are the most productive time in terms of both light quality and tranquility.

Eskicioğlu Mosque is located close to Ankara's historical trade and dining areas. The streets around Hacı Bayram Mosque are full of small restaurants and breakfast places offering traditional Ankara delicacies. It is not difficult to find Ankara tava, beyin tost (brain toast), and various kebab types in the artisan restaurants in this area.

Ulus Square and its surroundings also offer various dining options. At lunchtime, the artisan restaurants in the area serve home-cooked meals; this is the right address for an affordable and satisfying lunch.

Eskicioğlu Mosque can be combined with other important structures in Ankara's historical center to create a beautiful walking route. You can start from Hacı Bayram Mosque and the adjacent Temple of Augustus ruins and then proceed to Eskicioğlu Mosque. From there, you can climb towards Ankara Castle to include Ankara Castle and the Rahmi M. Koç Museum in your day.

This route, which can be planned for half a day to a full day, offers the opportunity to see traces of Ankara's Ottoman and pre-Republic periods together. Don't forget to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water with you; the slopes and cobblestone streets in the area require attention.

Eskicioğlu Mosque is an active place of worship. It is important to respect prayer times during your visit and not to disturb those who are praying. When entering the mosque, shoes must be removed and appropriate clothing must be worn; female visitors are expected to cover their heads.

As it is a historical building, care must be taken when taking photos inside; avoid photographing those who are praying. The streets around the mosque are narrow and cobblestone, making it quite difficult to walk with high heels.
