When to Go?
Due to the vast geography of the USA, the best time to visit varies by region. For the East Coast and New York, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal; summer can be very hot and crowded, while winter may bring snow. In desert regions like the West Coast and Utah, spring and autumn are preferred, while Yellowstone National Park offers its most beautiful scenery in summer.
Florida and the southeastern region offer comfortable temperatures in winter. If you want to visit Las Vegas, November-February is more suitable; temperatures can exceed 40°C in summer. In short, it would be wise to determine your planned region in advance and check the weather conditions for that period.
How to Get There?
To travel from Turkey to the USA, you need to obtain a B1/B2 tourist visa. Visa applications are made through the US Embassy website; the process can take several weeks. In some cases, an interview may also be required. Turkish citizens without a visa cannot enter, so start planning your trip at least 1-2 months in advance.
Direct flights from Turkey go to major airports (New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago). Travel time varies between 10-14 hours depending on the geography. For national transportation, there are options such as planes, buses (like Greyhound), or rental cars. Evaluate which one will be more economical according to your personal travel plan.
How Many Days to Stay?
Given the size of the USA, a minimum of 10-14 days is recommended. First-time visitors might prefer to focus on 2-3 cities for a deeper experience. To see two major cities like New York and San Francisco, 7-10 days are needed, and an additional 3-4 days if you want to add natural wonders like Zion and Antelope Canyon in Utah.
If you love Las Vegas and want to enjoy its nightlife, allocate 3-4 days. If you plan to visit remote areas like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, just exploring these places alone will require 4-5 days. If your budget and time allow, 15-21 days offer a very rich travel experience.
Suggested Itinerary
Classic West Route (14 days): Los Angeles → Las Vegas (3 days) → Grand Canyon/Utah (3 days: Zion, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon) → San Francisco (3 days) → return. This route combines natural beauty and city life and allows you to travel at your own pace by renting a car.
East Coast Route (10 days): New York (4 days) → Washington DC (2 days) → Niagara Falls (1 day) → Boston (2 days) → return. Perfect for history, architecture, and culture enthusiasts. Train or bus connections are convenient. It is possible to combine both routes in a single trip, but 18-21 days would be necessary.
City Transportation
In New York, the subway is the fastest and most economical way; you can buy a daily pass or a weekly MetroCard. In San Francisco, cable cars are iconic. In cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas, car rental is more practical because distances are large and public transportation is limited. Apps like Uber and Lyft are available in all major cities.
For inter-state travel, Greyhound bus company is an economical option; for long distances, there is also the Amtrak train. If you are going to natural areas like the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone, car rental is essential. Rental companies are found at airports, and prices are at reasonable levels.
Where to Stay?
Each city and region has different options. In New York, Midtown, Times Square, or Upper West Side are convenient locations; boutique hotels and Airbnb apartments offer a wide range of choices. In Las Vegas, hotels on the Strip are suitable for gaming, entertainment, and nightlife. In San Francisco, the Mission District or Castro attracts young travelers; prices can be high.
Accommodation near natural areas is more limited and expensive. You will need to make reservations near Zion National Park (in the town of Springdale). For budget travelers, motel chains (Super 8, Red Roof Inn) are safe and affordable in the USA. Airbnb is a good alternative for travelers seeking a local experience.
What to Eat?
In US cuisine, hamburgers, hot dogs, and pizza are classics; New York-style pizza is considered one of the best in the world. Each city has its unique flavors: Philadelphia cheese steak, New Orleans Creole cuisine, Texas barbecue, California sushi bars. Mexican food, especially in the Southwest, is delicious and cheap. Coffee culture is strong; Starbucks and local cafes are available.
For budget travel, chain restaurants (Chipotle, Taco Bell) are filling and inexpensive options. Farmers' markets offer seasonal produce and local tastes. Alcohol laws vary from state to state; beer and wine are available outdoors in some places. It's easy to find affordable food; for luxury experiences, budget more in New York or San Francisco.
Shopping
The USA is known as a shopping paradise. In New York, Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue are centers for luxury brands; Times Square is a popular shopping area full of tourists. Beverly Hills is Los Angeles' chic shopping district. Outlet malls (especially in California and Nevada) offer branded products at low prices. Incredible discounts can be found during Thanksgiving and Black Friday (November).
Electronics, designer clothes, and bags are affordable. Best Buy (electronics), Target (general merchandise), Macy's (clothing) are chain stores. As a local souvenir, Native American jewelry is affordable and unique in Utah. In the USA, sales tax is added at the checkout, not included in the product label price.
Budget
Daily budget varies depending on accommodation type and cities visited. Budget travelers can manage with 60-80 dollars a day (basic hotel, street food). For mid-range comfort, 120-180 dollars are needed. New York, San Francisco, and Las Vegas are expensive cities; daily expenses can increase by 100-150 dollars. Entrance fees for national parks are reasonable (15-35 dollars/vehicle), bus and train tickets are expensive for long distances (but student discounts are available).
Basic expenses such as visa, plane ticket (between 400-700 dollars from Turkey), and insurance should be kept separate. Health insurance is critical; hospital services in the USA are very expensive (therefore, get international health insurance). Generally, a budget of 1000-1500 dollars, excluding visa and flight, is considered appropriate for a 10-day trip.
Things to Consider
Visa: Turkish citizens cannot enter the USA without a tourist visa. Applications should be made at least 60 days in advance. Health Insurance: The US healthcare system is private and very expensive; do not go without travel insurance. Electricity and Adapter: The USA uses 110V; a converter is needed for Turkish devices. Money: Credit cards are widely accepted; however, some places (taxis, small businesses) may request cash. ATMs where you can withdraw dollars are found everywhere.
Safety: Avoid walking alone late at night in big cities; tourist areas are safe but caution should be exercised. Alcohol: Drinking laws vary by state; in some places, it is only sold to those over 21. No one should drink while driving; penalties are very severe. Universal Adapter: Turkish plugs do not fit directly in the USA, an adapter should be purchased.
Best Places for Photography
Natural Wonders: The Grand Canyon (Arizona) is world-famous; sunsets offer fantastic photo opportunities. Antelope Canyon (Arizona) is an Instagram favorite with its soft light and rock formations. Yellowstone's thermal springs and Grand Prismatic Spring offer colorful scenery. Zion National Park is dazzling with its sharp rocks and valley views. Monument Valley on the Utah-Arizona border looks like a movie set.
City Views: Times Square in New York is vibrant and colorful; the city view from the Empire State Building is astonishing. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco looks best in early morning light. Las Vegas's night illumination and Fountain Show are worth documenting. Central Park in New York offers a mix of nature and city. Niagara Falls is better photographed from the Canadian side but is also impressive from the American side.
