Finik Castle

Summers in Şırnak are harsh, and exploring the rocky terrain in the afternoon can be tiring. Spring months are the most suitable period in terms of both temperature and surrounding greenery. Autumn can also be preferred as the weather starts to cool down. Since there is little natural shade in the rock-cut areas, visiting in the morning is physically easier.

From Şırnak city center, head towards Glkonak and follow the Cizre-Şırnak road junction. Approximately 12 km later, you will encounter the castle on the north side of the Tigris River, on the upper section of the highway. If you don't have your own vehicle, you may need to get off a minibus going to Glkonak and complete the last section on foot. Since signage can be scarce along the way, having a map application with you will make your job easier.

Exploring the castle itself and the ruins of the surrounding ancient site takes between 1-2 hours. This time may extend slightly for those who want to take photos, or examine the cave houses and cisterns in detail. If you also add other points in the Glkonak district (such as Hesta Hot Springs) to your program, the day will turn into more than a half-day block.

In Şırnak city center, Kırmızı Medrese, Noah's Tomb, and Mem-u Zin Tomb are among other historical points to see. While in Glkonak, visiting the region's well-known Hesta Hot Springs is a way to split the day. Planning Finik Castle in the morning and the hot springs in the afternoon is a logical sequence.

The cave-houses carved into white limestone rocks are the most striking visual element of the castle. The frame looking out from the mouth of the cisterns and the side of the walls facing the Tigris River can be considered among the points where the light falls best. The sections with reliefs are suitable for close-ups; for a general plan, looking from high points on the river side provides a wider view.

The castle is a registered archaeological site, and the rock-cut structures can be fragile; it is necessary to be careful when climbing or touching. The terrain is not flat, so sturdy shoes will make your job easier. Since tourist infrastructure (such as toilets, buffets) is limited in the region, bring water and snacks with you. As current entrance fees and opening hours vary between sources, it is advisable to confirm with the Şırnak Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you go.

The castle's origins date back to the 1000s BC, and some traces of the ancient site are even attributed to 4000 BC. The structure, bearing reliefs from the Guti and Assyrian periods, was also used under Persian, Roman, and Byzantine rule in later periods. In the late Ottoman period, while the region was part of Eruh district of Siirt, it was incorporated into Şırnak in 1990. This long period of use has allowed the castle to become a layered structure bearing traces from different periods.
