Balıklıgöl is not just a lake; it is a place that carries the soul of Şanlıurfa, where faith, history, and daily life intertwine. Hundreds of visitors walk around the lake every day: elderly people praying, children feeding fish, tourists taking photos... Despite all this crowd, the place maintains a strange tranquility.

The thousands of carp fish in the lake have been considered untouchable for centuries. According to legend, those who harm these fish either fall ill or get into trouble. Believe it or not, this belief has protected the lake to this day and increased the number of fish. Visitors can buy food from vendors on the lake shore to feed the fish.

Şanlıurfa is one of Turkey's hottest cities. In summer, the thermometer can reach 42-45 degrees Celsius. Therefore, April, May, September, and October are the most reasonable periods for a visit. The weather is suitable for sightseeing, and the crowds are relatively smaller.

If you plan to visit in the summer, prefer the early morning hours or late afternoon. Especially after sunset, the Halil-ür Rahman Mosque and the lake are illuminated; these hours are also very productive for photography. During Ramadan, the city takes on a different atmosphere; after iftar, the area around Balıklıgöl becomes lively, offering a great opportunity to observe local life.

The most practical way to reach Şanlıurfa is via GAP Airport. Direct flights are available from many cities, especially Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Shuttle and taxi options are available from the airport to the city center.

For those arriving by bus, Şanlıurfa Intercity Bus Terminal is located close to the city center. Balıklıgöl is right in the middle of the city center, so you can easily reach it by taxi or municipal buses when you arrive at the terminal or airport. It is also possible to reach all historical sites in the vicinity by walking within the city.

Balıklıgöl, located right in the heart of Şanlıurfa's historical fabric, is an ideal starting point for exploring the surroundings. After visiting the lake, immediately visit the adjacent Halil-ür Rahman Mosque and Aynzeliha Lake. Then, take a short walk up to the Cave of Prophet Abraham.

After the cave, climb up to Urfa Castle to enjoy panoramic views of the city. In the afternoon, you can explore the historical Covered Bazaar and Gümrük Han and do some shopping. The next day, set off early in the morning to Göbeklitepe, and then visit Harran. These two points are approximately 15-50 km away from Balıklıgöl.

Şanlıurfa cuisine is one of Turkey's most unique and spicy cuisines. In the restaurants around Balıklıgöl, you must try çiğ köfte, lahmacun, katmer, and liver kebab. Urfa kebab, unlike Adana kebab, is prepared larger and spicier.

For breakfast, Urfa cheese, sürk (dried cheese), and the duo of tahini-molasses are indispensable. Sitting in the tea gardens near the lake and drinking a glass of strong tea is the best way to get into the rhythm of the city. For dinner, you can choose the artisan restaurants around the Covered Bazaar.

Balıklıgöl and its surroundings are a very productive area for photography enthusiasts. In shots taken from the eastern shore of the lake, the minaret of the Halil-ür Rahman Mosque is reflected on the water surface; this reflection yields very beautiful results, especially in the early morning and evening light.

After the night illumination is turned on, the yellow-toned lighting of the mosque creates a magnificent reflection on the lake. From Urfa Castle, you can see Balıklıgöl and the historical texture of the city together; this angle is ideal for wide-angle shots. Visitors feeding fish on the lake shore can also be subjects for interesting street photographs.

Balıklıgöl is a religiously sacred place. If you plan to visit the Halil-ür Rahman Mosque, you must wear appropriate clothing; a headscarf is mandatory for women, and short pants and sleeveless clothing are not allowed inside. A respectful attitude is also expected around the lake.

Harming the fish in the lake, trying to catch them, or throwing stones at them is strictly forbidden and not welcomed. In summer, carry plenty of water; do not forget sunscreen and a hat. The area is kept quite clean, but carrying your own trash helps preserve this beautiful place in the city.

For those looking for budget-friendly options, various mid-range hotels are available in the city center. If you plan to visit Göbeklitepe and Harran as well, staying in the city center will be the most practical solution for transportation.

For those who only want to see Balıklıgöl and the city center, one day might be enough. However, Şanlıurfa, when considered with its surroundings, is a city that deserves at least 2-3 days.

The first day can be dedicated to Balıklıgöl, Halil-ür Rahman Mosque, Prophet Abraham's Cave, Urfa Castle, and the Covered Bazaar. On the second day, you can go to Göbeklitepe early in the morning and visit Harran in the afternoon. On the third day, you can take a day trip to nearby districts like Halfeti and Rumkale.
