Milas Stone Artifacts Museum

Milas Stone Artifacts Museum operates within the walls of Beçin Castle, in a centuries-old madrasah structure. The layout, consisting of 9 rooms, 2 corridors, and a large courtyard, reflects the original architecture of the madrasah. The 35 stone artifacts on display are categorized into inscriptions, tombstones, and architectural decorative elements, presented chronologically within the context of the Beyliks and Ottoman periods. One of the rooms features models of Seljuk, Beyliks, and Ottoman madrasahs, documenting the educational institutions of the era.

The museum is part of the Milas Museum Complex. Within the same area, the Milas House Mansion, Milas Carpet Museum, Children's Activity Center, and the Monumental Tomb of King Hecatomnus, which is on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List, also await visitors. In addition to artifacts unearthed from excavations, pieces brought from the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum have also been included in the collection.

Milas is located in the heart of the Aegean climate, so it can be visited year-round. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most suitable periods in terms of both temperature and crowds. Due to its proximity to Bodrum, tourist influx increases in July-August; during this period, being at the gate by 08:30 ensures a much calmer visit. The museum is closed on Mondays; plan your visit accordingly.

The museum is located within Beçin Castle, approximately 5 km from Milas city center. It is possible to reach it by taxi from Milas bus station in 10-15 minutes. If you are coming by car, there is parking available 50 meters from the museum. For those coming from Bodrum, the distance between Milas and Bodrum is about 40 km; connections can easily be made by bus or car. Simply follow the signs indicating the direction of Beçin from Milas city center.

45-60 minutes is sufficient for the Stone Artifacts Museum alone. For those who wish to visit the entire complex, including the Milas House Mansion, Carpet Museum, and Hecatomnus Monumental Tomb, it would be appropriate to plan at least 2-2.5 hours. Families with children can also spend time at the Children's Activity Center; in this case, allocating half a day ensures a more relaxed visit.

Upon entering the complex, first visit the Hecatomnus Monumental Tomb; this UNESCO-listed structure is the most striking point of the area. Then proceed to the Stone Artifacts Museum to examine the madrasah rooms and stone artifacts. The interior design of the Milas House Mansion is particularly admired by visitors; here, the plan and decorative elements of Milas civil architecture are exhibited. Finally, at the Carpet Museum, you can see the historical journey of Milas carpets and the workshop atmosphere. Taking a break at the historical bazaar and coffee houses in Milas city center on your way out would be a nice conclusion.

The museum's courtyard offers an ideal setting for photographing stone artifacts in natural light. The stone-arched entrances of the madrasah rooms and the original wall texture are perfect for striking shots. The monumental stone blocks of the Hecatomnus Monumental Tomb also provide a strong photographic composition. The interiors of the Milas House Mansion, adorned with wooden craftsmanship, are also particularly interesting for architectural photography.

Milas is a district known for its olive oil dishes and local delicacies. There are many restaurants and coffee houses around the historical bazaar in the city center. Milas's famous tangerine jam, artichokes with olive oil, and fresh seafood are among the must-try flavors in the region. On your way back to the center after leaving the museum, the small artisan restaurants in Milas Bazaar offer both affordable and local tastes.

Some visitors note that certain sections of the museum may be closed from time to time; it might be helpful to call the museum administration to confirm open sections before visiting. Entry to the interior of the Hecatomnus Monumental Tomb is not possible; the structure is examined from the outside. Since the museum area has stone flooring, wear comfortable walking shoes. Wheelchair access is limited.
