Kızılören Han (Kandemir Han)

The most suitable periods to visit Kızılören Han are April-May and September-October. The weather is mild, the surrounding steppe landscape comes alive with greenery, and lighting conditions are very favorable for photography. In summer, the heat of the Konya plain can rise significantly; if you plan to visit during this season, choosing the early morning hours will ensure a much more comfortable trip. In winter, snowfall is occasionally seen in the region, which can make access to the structure difficult.

The han is approximately 40-41 kilometers from Konya city center, on the D695 Konya-Beyşehir highway. By private car, it takes about 40-45 minutes from Konya. After reaching Kızılören village, you can ask the villagers for directions to the han; the structure is located on a high hill in the western part of the village.

There are regular bus services from Konya to Beyşehir; however, since the han is not directly on the main road but at a point accessed from within the village, a private car or taxi may be needed for the final section. You can rent a car from Konya city center and visit other hans along the Beyşehir route (Altunapa Han, Kuruçeşme Han) on the same day.

Kızılören Han is one of the hans that follow each other on the historical caravan route between Konya and Beyşehir. For those who want to plan a day trip, we can suggest the following order: Leave Konya early in the morning and first visit Altunapa Han, then Kuruçeşme Han. Kızılören Han was built by Emir Kandemir during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev I. Constructed in the 13th century, the structure was part of the system of stopping points where merchants and caravans stayed along the Silk Road route. The Seljuks built hans at regular intervals to make trade routes safe and functional; these hans served both as shelters and for security.

The structure reflects the classic Seljuk han plan, consisting of open courtyard and covered sections. The crown gate on the eastern facade is an important architectural element that showcases the stone craftsmanship of the period. The rectangular plan, extending along the northwest-southeast axis, with its walls still largely intact, continues to be one of the unique examples of Anatolian Seljuk architecture in the region.

Kızılören Han, being situated on a high hill, offers a commanding view of its surroundings. There are no regular facilities, cafes, or restrooms nearby; we recommend bringing enough water and snacks. The terrain around the structure can be uneven, so opt for comfortable walking shoes. In winter and rainy periods, village roads can become muddy; it is much safer to go with high-clearance vehicles during these times. Avoid damaging the structure during your visit; climbing on or writing on historical stones is both legally and ethically problematic.
