SEKA Paper Museum

SEKA Paper Museum is a place where the SEKA factory, which became a symbol of the paper industry in Turkey, was brought back to life after its closure. Opened in 2016, the museum is considered one of the most comprehensive examples in Turkey in terms of preserving industrial heritage and bringing it to society. Managed by the Museums Branch Directorate of the Department of Culture and Social Affairs of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, the museum operates as an active cultural space with its permanent exhibitions, workshop activities, and school programs.

The exhibition area features documents, photographs, and original production equipment from SEKA's establishment to its factory period. The colossal paper and printing machines offer a tangible window into the worker life of that era. The Science Center within the same building transforms the museum into a place where not only history enthusiasts but also children can enjoy spending time.

It is possible to visit the museum throughout the year. Weekday mornings tend to have relatively fewer visitors. During the school trip season, especially on weekday mornings between October and May, you might encounter student groups; going a bit earlier during this period or choosing a weekend will ensure a calmer visit. Since the museum is indoors, weather conditions do not directly affect the visit.

The museum is located in Kozluk Mahallesi, approximately 2 km from İzmit city center. For those coming from other districts of Kocaeli and Istanbul, using the İzmit exit via the TEM Highway is the most practical way. Municipal buses and minibuses from within the city reach the area; it is necessary to check the route beforehand from İzmit public transport lines. For those coming by car, free parking is available right next to the museum.

45–60 minutes may be sufficient to visit only the paper museum section. If you include the Science Center located in the same building, especially if you are visiting with children, allocating 1.5 to 2 hours provides a much more comfortable experience. Visitors often state that spending time is much more enjoyable when visiting both sections together.

The most striking photo spots in the museum are the colossal historical paper and printing machines in the exhibition hall. The size of these machines and the details reflecting the engineering understanding of the era offer interesting shots for industrial photography. The original architecture of the factory and the high ceilings inside the building also create a suitable environment for wide-angle shots.

We recommend calling the museum beforehand to find out if there is a food and beverage area within the museum. In İzmit city center, there is a wide selection of restaurants ranging from Turkish cuisine to seafood. Kocaeli's pişmaniye dessert is the most well-known local delicacy; you can find it in many patisseries and shops in the city center.

Admission to the museum is free for individual visits. The vast majority of visitors also visit the Science Center section for free; visitor comments suggest that a separate fee may apply for school groups. If you are coming by public transport, you do not need to plan any additional expenses other than transportation. There is no additional fee for those coming by car and using the car park.
