Hıdırbey Musa Tree

The Hıdırbey Musa Tree is not an ordinary tree. This colossal plane tree, with a trunk diameter of 7.5 meters and a circumference approaching 21 meters, is one of Turkey's rare examples granted monumental tree status. Its branches create a shadow area of approximately 1,000 square meters; this size means a small community can gather under the tree. Indeed, in the past, the natural hollow within the tree was used as a barber shop by the villagers of Hıdırbey.

The tree is registered by the High Council of Real Estate, Ancient Works, and Monuments and is also listed on the Culture Portal. Although visitor comments express different estimates regarding the tree's age, no official age information based on a definitive document has been shared with the public.

The most suitable period to visit the Hıdırbey Musa Tree is spring and autumn. Between March and May, the roads are more passable, and the surrounding nature is green. October-November is also a good choice for cool weather and fewer crowds.

While the tree's wide shade is cooling in summer, the hot and humid climate of the Samanda region can make the journey more tiring. In winter, during rainy weather, the narrow village road can be muddy and slippery, so caution is required during this period.

The most practical way to reach the Hıdırbey Musa Tree is by private car. A narrow asphalt road extends from the Samanda district center to Hıdırbey Village. Since road conditions may be worse when coming from the Çevlik port side, the Samanda route should be preferred.

Since road signs are insufficient, it is essential to keep a navigation app open. Visitors state that they sometimes take wrong turns on the village road due to lack of signage. Taking public transport from Antakya or skenderun to Samanda and then hiring a taxi is also an option, but there is no village-internal service.

The tree's colossal trunk and the natural dome formed by its branches offer impressive shots from every angle. Photos taken by standing next to the trunk and looking up are among the best for conveying the tree's true size. It is also possible to capture the Ab-ı Hayat Fountain and the tree in the same frame.

In the morning, the light filtering through the tree leaves creates a beautiful atmosphere. The seating areas by the flowing water in the tea garden also provide a natural frame.

Breakfast can be had at the tea garden located right next to the tree, by the flowing water. Visitors particularly highlight this area; drinking tea or coffee accompanied by the sound of water stands out as one of the most enjoyable aspects of the place.

In the vicinity, small stalls set up by locals sell handmade products and organic village delicacies. Region-specific olive oil, molasses, and jams can be found at these stalls. The cold water flowing from the Ab-ı Hayat Fountain has become a must-visit spot for almost all visitors.

The road is narrow and steep in some sections; a high-clearance vehicle might be advantageous, but it is also possible to reach with a standard car. If coming from the Çevlik side, it should be considered that road conditions may be worse.

While toilet facilities are available, visitors have expressed complaints about cleanliness; therefore, it would be wise to carry wet wipes with you. Due to insufficient signage, going without a navigation app can lead to wasted time. Admission is completely free.

The Hıdırbey Musa Tree comfortably fits into a half-day trip program. 1-2 hours are sufficient to explore and photograph the tree, drink water from the Ab-ı Hayat Fountain, and take a short break at the tea garden. If you are departing from Antakya or Samanda, you can combine it with other natural and historical sites in the region to create a full-day itinerary.
