Yeşilli Mosque (Hisariçi Mosque)

If you want to examine Yeşilli Mosque architecturally, prefer weekday afternoons; you'll have time to take photos from outside and explore the interior peacefully. During Friday prayer times, the congregation density increases, so for those who want to focus on architectural details, morning hours before Friday are more suitable. In spring and autumn, the green paint of the exterior facade appears most vibrant in daylight.

The mosque is located in the heart of Balıkesir city center, in the Eski Kuyumcular Neighborhood. It is possible to reach it by municipal buses and minibuses coming from Balıkesir Intercity Bus Terminal to the center. Since it is within walking distance in the city center, you can add it to your bazaar or historical area visit. If you are coming by car, you can look for parking on the surrounding streets; finding parking can be difficult during busy hours.

It is known that a structure called Eski Kuyumcular Masjid previously stood on the land where Yeşilli Mosque is located. The current mosque is thought to date back to the late 18th century, approximately between 1786-1789; however, the exact construction date and patron have not yet been clarified.

The building sits on a rectangular plan and is covered with a wooden roof. Stone, rubble brick, and wood were used together in its construction. Inside, 12 log columns arranged in rows serve both a load-bearing and aesthetic function. The minaret of the single-minaret structure is carved from andesite stone, and the stone carvings showcase the craftsmanship of the period. The green-painted exterior facade has given the mosque both its visual identity and its popular name.

The most striking photographic angle of the mosque is the street perspective that frames the entire green-painted exterior facade. When the sun hits the facade directly, the colors appear most vibrant. You can prefer close-ups for the stone carvings on the minaret. Inside, the arrangement of the log columns and the wooden ceiling offer an interesting composition in a wide-angle shot; remember to show respect to the congregation when taking photos during prayer times.

Eski Kuyumcular Neighborhood and its surroundings are an area where Balıkesir's traditional artisan restaurants and small cafes are concentrated. You can find Balıkesir meatballs and tarhana soup, indispensable parts of Balıkesir cuisine, in the artisan restaurants nearby. For morning visits, fresh simit and pastries from nearby bakeries are also a good option.

Yeşilli Mosque can be easily included in a historical walking route of Balıkesir city center. You can start your visit from Eski Kuyumcular Neighborhood and continue towards the Balıkesir Archaeology Museum and the bazaar area. All these points are within walking distance of each other, so you can comfortably explore them in half a day without a car. The historical bazaar texture immediately around the mosque is also worth noting while exploring.

Yeşilli Mosque is an active place of worship; during your visit, pay attention to prayer times and be careful not to disturb the worshipping congregation. You need to take off your shoes when entering the mosque; female visitors are expected to cover their heads. Since the structure is small, it may not be suitable for large groups to enter at once.
