Çubuk Karagöl Nature Park

The best times to visit Karagöl are spring and autumn. In April–May, the area around the lake comes alive with fresh greenery, and temperatures are very suitable for walking. In September–October, the forest's leaves turn yellow, orange, and red, offering a visual feast; this period is especially valuable for those who want to take photos.

It can also be a preferred place for picnics in the summer months; however, the park gets very crowded on weekends and public holidays. Arriving early in the morning provides a calmer experience and eliminates parking problems. In winter, the park usually becomes deserted; caution should be exercised as roads can become slippery in rainy and cold weather.

If you are departing from Ankara city center, simply follow the Ankara–Çubuk highway (D180). Those coming from the direction of Esenboğa Airport need to use the Ankara–Esenboğa–Çankırı highway and turn towards Çubuk. The total distance varies between approximately 68–74 km.

Using a private car is by far the most practical option; the park's location within the forest makes public transport difficult. Those who prefer public transport can reach Çubuk district center by bus from Ankara and then take a taxi or dolmuş to the park entrance. There are directional signs along the way.

One of the biggest attractions of Karagöl Nature Park is its picnic and barbecue areas. You can enjoy the food you've prepared at the tables within the park. Designated areas are available for those who wish to barbecue; it is mandatory to adhere to park rules and fire safety precautions.

You may find small buffets or street vendors inside or right at the entrance of the park, but their presence cannot always be guaranteed. There are various restaurants and cafes in Çubuk district center; it is worth stopping by the district center to taste local delicacies in this district famous for its Çubuk pickles.

The most impressive photo spot in the park is the Karagöl Observation Deck, reached by walking approximately 200 meters east from the entrance. From here, you can get a wide panorama covering both the entire lake and the surrounding villages; especially at sunset, the light creates a very different atmosphere.

The lakeside is also very suitable for fog and reflection photos in the morning hours. Photos taken among the colorful leaves in the forest during autumn are among the most popular images on social media. If you are doing nature photography, aim to be there at sunrise or sunset.

There are two toilets in the park; one at the entrance point and the other next to the children's playground. Those planning long walks are advised to carry sufficient water and snacks. Since forest trails can sometimes be uneven, comfortable walking shoes should be preferred.

On weekends and holidays, the parking lot can fill up; arriving early largely solves this problem. To preserve the natural texture of the park, it is important to collect your trash in bags you bring and dispose of it in trash bins or take it with you. When barbecuing, it is mandatory to comply with the areas designated by the park management.

You can leave Ankara early in the morning and reach the park after about a 1–1.5 hour drive. Immediately upon arrival, you can explore the area with a short walk by the lake, then go up to the observation deck to enjoy the view. You can spend the midday at the picnic area and enjoy a barbecue.

In the afternoon, you can explore the forest walking trails, and children can spend time in the playground. On the way back, you can stop by Çubuk district center to buy local products, especially Çubuk pickles, and take a look at the historical texture of the district. This way, both nature and cultural experiences can be enjoyed in a single day.
